Seatbelt cleaning & your safety...FYI
I've always thought dyeing or cleaning seatbelts with harsh chemicals was a bad idea but had no idea that simply washing them in the dishwasher with soap was hard on them. According to the writer in post #12, it appears that is the case: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=150303
Can anyone else verify this?

Re: Seatbelt cleaning & your safety...FYI
I put new 3 point belts in my truck. I didn't like the thought of a face plant into the steering wheel or my wife's head hitting a steel dash.
EDIT: CHILDHOOD FLASH BACK! My dad had an old jeep that just had lap belts in it. We went 4 wheeling in the snow when I was 11 or 12 and he bounced it hard across a ditch and I did a face plant into the dash. There was blood all over my shirt. My mom was pissed, but I had fun, I wanted to go again after it stopped bleeding

Re: Seatbelt cleaning & your safety...FYI
I have always seen people selling used belts on ebay. My thought has always been that cloth that is 40+ years old has to have some breakdown. I will put new aftermarket belts in my truck when its done. Good post for everyone!

Re: Seatbelt cleaning & your safety...FYI
I've also been told/read that you shouldn't reuse seatbelts out of a vehicle that's been in a hard impact. That also goes for the Silverados/Tahoes, etc with the integrated seat belts.

Re: Seatbelt cleaning & your safety...FYI
Thanks for the great post Brad.
I bought used belts (ivory, of all colors) and couldn't get them clean enough. Now I know not to try any further and go the extra mile by buying new. Who has quality seatbelts in an affordable range? ^^^ Whoops, there I go buttin' in on a different topic. Sorry Brad, I'll start a new one... Last edited by ETsC10; 02-01-2009 at 09:59 PM. |

Re: Seatbelt cleaning & your safety...FYI
there's a reason that all major racing orginazations have date expirations on seatbelts// anybody whose really relying on 40year old belts to save them is quite the fool

Re: Seatbelt cleaning & your safety...FYI
I rappel with nylon rope using a nylon rappeling harness. They're only cleaned with the mildest of soap. They're also kept out of the light when not being used as UV rays play havoc on Nylon.
Christy's 54 had some really cool vintage seatbelts in it with aircraft type buckles when we got it....I had them rewebbed. |

Can someone recommend a good 3-point belt that will work in a '72 c10?

Re: Seatbelt cleaning & your safety...FYI
Also taken from that same thread is this.
There is a place here in East Texas that restores seat belts.last time I checked it was less than $200 to get all the belts replaced. You could even buy just the roll of belting if you wanted For you guys who just have to have a "correct restoration" this might be of interest to you.

Let us know what they quote you - I need to get my white ones done too. Specially since I've dyed them and put them in the dishwasher

I am going to put 3 point seatbelts in my truck so my wife will allow my son to ride in it.

Re: Seatbelt cleaning & your safety...FYI
I have re-dyed several sets and had no problems with them. I even used a set as straps to pull a big block engine and had no problems. I do not recommend using harsh chemicals to clean them however.
But, to each his own. If you are scared, then just replace them with newer ones. |
