Will this column work?
I have a 47 Chev with a camaro clip. Looking at a steering column from a 70 gmc pickup automatic. He states the column length is 36" including shafts?
Now I have ben reading that 30" is ideal? Is this too long at 36"? My apologies but I haven't a clue on what I am talking about. lol!! |

Re: Will this column work?
you can always shorten either the column or the shaft. 70 GMC should be about 32 long. You can always get a bearing kit and use the stock column it you want to preserve the old look.

Re: Will this column work?
I tried a 74 truck column on mine and the shift arm interfered with the exhaust manifolds (350, rams horn). I used a 82 Eldo column, apparantly not a popular choice, which was 30" and fit fine. My build thread has details.

Re: Will this column work?
Here are some photos of a 70 pickup column. It is out of a 4 speed truck that my son had so there is no shift lever for an automatic. The column from the top of the turn signal switch housing to the bottom of the bearing is 32-3/4 inches.
With it propped up in one of my spare cabs and set up to where it should be comfortable with a 3 inch dish or later steering wheel. Not propped up quite high enough though. There is a little over 4 inches sticking through the floorboard It could be slid in or out a bit to get that exact comfortable fit. Last edited by mr48chev; 02-26-2009 at 02:15 AM. |
