Cab Out Of Alignment? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Had my cab, fenders and hood painted and installed by a good(?) painter. Put the bed together and installed it. Noticed the gap between the bed and cab didn't look right. Took some measurements and it's closer together on the drivers side than the passenger side. Tried to adjust better, to no avail. Thought I'd just have to live with it. Was putting on the front bumper Sunday, and found the passeger side rubs the grille, but the drivers side has a heckuva gap. Tried to shim the bumper with washers, but that didn't help. The only thing I can think of, is that when he installed the cab, it's not aligned with the frame properly? Is there an easy way to re-align the cab without totally taking the front clip apart? Any help, comment, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx.

I don't know of now easy way. You may be able to loosen it all, and move the cab, but you have a better chance at scratching something. Get the cab square on the frame, then reassemble the front clip.

Dan, get under it. Study the 4 mounts that hold the cab on. The mounts should be centered in the brackets.

You should be able to tell right off. Also check the core support mounts out.

If you have a cherry picker or a garage with rafters you could lift the cab up a little and slide it around. Run a 4x4 through the
cab and come-along it up a bit.

If your fenders and hood all looks good(gap cracks).Then I'd loosen the bolts on the core support and the cab mounts to the frame and try to cock the whole thing around a little.Unless your frame is bent you should be able to rock it enough to straighten it up.

I'm thinking that the only thing I can do, is to take the nose off, and straighten the cab, and then go back together?

Not looking forward to that. As far as the fender/hood gaps go, they are not straight. Maybe I could re-align them when I put it back together? And to think, the guy that started painting my truck is supposed to have been a professional?

He thinks he's another Foose or Coddington now, from what I've been hearing. Anybody closeby wanna lend a hand?

Guess I'll start taking it apart this weekend. Wondered what I was going to be doing?

1/2 inch cocked cab will really show up at both ends. At the grill support you can get a 1/4 of an inch back. Then you fight the spacing the bumpers square off the grill. Even showing up on spacing between the cab and bed.

Before you go pulling things apart break out your tape measure. Measure cab position vs. frame at common points on both sides. Make 100% sure that is your issue!

After I swapped my cab mounts, that's how I squared mine up.

Crawled under it yesterday after work and took a few measurements. Sure enogh, it's out of square about 1/2".

Figure I'll wait till it gets a little warmer before I tackle this?

No place to put fenders and hood, where it won't get stepped on in the garage. Could lay them on picknick table until ready for install? Sounds like a plan for now?

Its a simple enough issue to solve. Long as you have help talking the front clip off.
