S-10 swappers I need your help...
I have a chance to get an S-10 chassis from the local scrap yard...
It is a regular cab short bed... What chassis do I need to do my swap.. My truck is a 53 shortbed... We this one they have work? Also what else do I need with it.. I know the trans mount.. Steering colum? They want $250 for it.. And it will come the way I ask for it...

regular cab long beb is what you want. it is the easiest to do this swap.

Is that a good idea when you can just wait and find the one you really need.(2 splices to weld) Just me but I dont like what I see most the guys do in the bed.. Making it so shallow. Is there any thing that can be done that still gives you a good box?

Definetly, go with the reg cab long box. You will be doing enough of the "making it work" thing with the rest of the truck. Start with the correct wheelbase, and that's one less headache/project. The ride height is directly in proportion to the depth of the bed. As stated before, you can't get both without either serious rebuilding the rear frame rails, or mounting everything higher off the frame.
As for what to take from the s-10, take everything. You can use the steering column and wheel, the brake and mastercylinder, and the gas pedal. I would go as far as cuting out the trany tunnel and gas filler door just in case. I have the hinge brakets from the tailgate - don't know if I'm going to use them - but I salvaged them just in case. You can also use the wiring and harness if you choose. I've even see a guy use the door latches from the s-10, but my skills are nowhere near that level. If you have the space, keep as much of the s-10 as you can for as long as you can, because it has a lot of useful parts that with a little modification, can be made to work with the AD trucks. Once you get it all put together, then you can go back through and start spending monies on the shinny stuff and upgrades. - Jeff |
