how heavy is it?
Help somebody. I am at work and need to know the aprox weight of one of my trucks.

my c20 longhorn is 5100.. i know most of out trucks are from 4200 or so to 5000... so my guess for your short step is 4400.

I've been searching for a couple months for the weight of my truck also. So far the only thing I have found is when looking up the truck value on the NADA web page it shows a '68 short step at 3255lbs. Any know for sure or know where to find this info?

We have big rig scales where I work. My 67 SWB 4X4 weighs in at 4850 with a BB, 1/2 tank of gas and me in the truck (I weigh 225). Our scales run in 50lb. increments.

My '69 SWB V-8/Automatic with P/S, A/C, P/B and me, weighs in about 4800 lbs, with half tank of fuel.
NY says they weigh HOW MUCH????? That ain't right. Used to be, that in Arkansas, car tags were based on weight (still are) but I remember that my old '56 Mercury weighed 4410lbs, which was 91 lbs under the next increment (of 4501 and up). Trucks were licensed based on capacity, i.e., 1/2 ton tags were the cheapest. 3/4 and 1-tonners got the next increment, etc. My '74 C65 Dump truck (tri-axle) got licensed for a max weight of 62000 lbs, at about $1200/year, in '75.

My longhorn tips the scales @ 4040, with 3/4 tank of fuel......less driver! this one is pretty stripped tho.....no heat or air, no front inners. no front bumper, alum heads& intake, jazz plastic buckets, 1/2 ton suspension.......oops no door glass! I guess the weight on a short step in the 3500-3700 lb range.......man would i love to strip one of those babys down to the "bare nesessities"! CrazyL

Holy crap I was surprised when I got my truck weighed at the feed and grain store today (for a DMV certification). Stock '68 C20, with a spare tire under the bed and 1/2 tank of gas... 4,790 pounds! Kind of shocking, but I guess the 3/4 ton suspension, a/c and heater, and all iron engine parts have something to do with that.

The 3050 on the NY title may be the original purchase price. 3050 is WAY too light for that truck. Add 800 lbs and you'd be more in the ballpark. Some states including the one I live in put the original purchase price on the title and it is often confused for being the weight as the weight and the price were damned near the same in the late 60's . Remember a 69 camaro was weighing in at 3200 lbs back in the day so a full sized truck would have a hard time weighing in at less . My 68 3/4 ton LWB fleetside weighs in at a healthy 4400 lbs . Wanna race?

jwill, I noticed you're from Texas. If you really want to know you could go to the Motorplex in Ennis. They have scales there. I would imagine they're pretty accurate. Weighed my '98 SS camaro there. With me and a full tank 3660lbs. My '67 swb with no a/c listed at 3700lb on the title. Originally an inline 6 with manual.

My '70, with my butt, very little fuel, and no other junk in it (aka 'race trim'
 ) weighed 4110lbs.2WD, 1/2 ton, short/wide, with a spray-in bedliner, '99 Suburban second-row seat, V8, A/C, power steering, power brakes, Vortecs, 700R4, etc.

Here is the weigh ticket for my GMC shortie.
Small block with headers and alluminum intake...alluminum wheels, Th350, spare tire and a hand full of tools, bout 1/2 tnak of fuel and no driver. I was rather surprised myself. |

a friend was telling me that the wieght on a title was "dry wieght" meaning thats what it wieghed before any fluids were added. my title says my truck wieghs 3100 pounds. so it it's actually more like 3800 how can fluids add up to be that much?

Well, I don't know if gasoline weighs more per gallon than water, but a gallon of water weighs 128 ounces, or 8 pounds.
8 pounds x 22 gallons in the gas tank = 176 pounds at least theoretically. But then there's the diff(s), tranny, transfer case, engine oil, coolant, winshield washer fluid, and all the greasable fittings all over the underside, plus the battery, and the freon or whatever in the A/C system (if equipped). But even with all that stuff, 800 lbs does sound a bit much.

I had to go through the scales with mine when i took a load to the scrap yard. I have a 1/2 ton 4x4 350/th350.....just a "plain Jane" truck, nothing fancy. It was 4600 lbs on the way out of the yard with me in it.......i was about 200 then( a little more now:p )
so the truck is about 4400 lbs. That's a 4x4 remember, so there's the extra weigh of front axle and trans.case and drive shaft. IMO a short step c-10 would be 4000 lbs. tops! Jason

Not to beat a dead horse, but I am also at work and trying to figure out the weight of my truck so that I can get it registered. It is a 69 1/2 ton long bed fleet side. No p/s, no p/b, no a/c.
The original title literally says "1/2" for chassis weight and "10,000" for gross weight. DMV wants to know Gross Weight, Empty weight, GVWR, and GCWR. I'm new to this classic truck stuff, so please lend the new guy a hand. Thanks. |

About 3800 pounds for the truck, 1000 lbs payload. I thing that gets you your GVWR of 4800 lbs (there should be a sticker on the truck somwhere). the 10,000 would be loaded with a max trailer capacity of around 5,000 lb (assuming a correct hitch of course).
When in doubt, look at the plate inside the door. It will have a GVWR listed of around 5k for a 1/2 ton. Take the 1/2 ton away and that leaves you with 4k. This is roughly what the truck will weigh with driver, passenger and equiptment. THe 3800 lbs I site above was with me on the scales too. Not much fuel and before mods.

Thanks Blue68. I'm going to use your numbers to get the truck registered and get some tags. I can't check the plate inside the door yet because I'm not picking the truck up until this weekend. I bought it from someone in another state and was mailed the title. Thanks again.

Isn't that the states job to have those numbers on hand? I have never heard of a state that asked you for all that info, it'd be too easy to blow smoke up there tail pipe and pay less for registration.
