Gas tank for a 56

I want to install a rear under the bed gas tank on my 56 step side 1/2 ton. I see where Brothers sells one, anybody else sell them? I'm going to put the fill on the passenger side fender. I see a tech article on a 67-72 truck, any for a 56? thanks

Re: Gas tank for a 56

Rock Valley sells nice stainless fuel tanks . I am very happy with the tank that I have from them.

Re: Gas tank for a 56

I got mine from Performance Online, good price and well built. I got side fill, which requires modifications to the bed cross sill, not very well documented or explained. Top fill is ok. Look in my build thread for the install pics and a shot of the modified cross sill.

How low does the tank sit below the frame rails?

Here are three shots. One is from the back, notice that the bottom of the tank is even with the center of the stock spring pack. The second kind of shows the side, I don't have a straight side shot. Third shows the bracket modification I had to make, it is going to be reinforced with an angle. If you need an exact measurement I can get it for you.

It's no big deal but if you get a chance some time it would help me out.
Thanks

69 cougar will fit but exits out the back. I did see one where the fill tube was cut and another curved tube (I think it was exhaust tubing) was used to run it out the side.

Re: Gas tank for a 56

In an older issue of Truck Builder, a guy used a repop tank for a 57 Chevy sedan, filler out the fender. These tanks are inexpensive.

Re: Gas tank for a 56

I've done some measuring and it looks like a late 80-90s Chevy van tank will also work with a side exit.

Re: Gas tank for a 56

First go around I had an second tank mounted in the back out of a 68 Impala with a rear spount. Not pretty but worked. Only draw back was when full and climbing steep trails it would leak around the vented cap. It also hung lower and got pretty beat up over the ten years I had it in there. This aluminum one seem stouter and will be protected by a receiver hitch and secondary skid plate.
