Your thoughts on this motor I got for my truck

Hey I don't mind the questions. They actually get me thinking. Like the pistons. I never thought to figure out what they are. I do know that the block is a 4 bolt main. Also I'm fairly certain the deck height is standard. The suffix code is still there and doesn't appear to have been re stamped. Heads seem to be standard too. As for gaskets, I'm thinking of a set of Mr Gasket with copper head gaskets. Thin.

After a closer look today while doing some clean up. I found that something was banging around in the #5 cylinder. Looked like maybe a screw from the indentions on the head. Most likely the main reason for the last rebuild. All signs indicate it was prior to the rebuild. No damage to valves, piston or cylinder wall.

Well here's a few shots of what I got done today. Everything checks out great. I replace the timing chain and cleaned everything up real good. The dress up kit is only temp. just for look while it sits for now.

The intake cleaned up nicely too. Are you going to use the stock thermostat housing? I actually prefer the stock ones, blasted up nice like the intake. Those chrome Chinese POS ones just don't last.

The intake is in primer. But yes, it did clean up nicely. I will finish it with a High Heat aluminum paint. It's only a temp also. The intake in pic below is what I'm going with.

It gonna go in next week end if the weather permits. I finally got everything I need except the Accel power power coil I want. I'm currenly preping the headers to go on. I'm getting kind of impatient with it so I'm going to drop it in the camaro I pulled it out of long enough to fire it up and get it tuned. Once thats done I'm yankin it back out to get it ready to drop into the truck. I still have alot I haven't put on it yet but here's some pics.

I've never used a chrome pan before. I was going to restore the old one but I got this one just because. Thanks for the comment.

I kinda figured I might have problems with drips with some stories I've heard. So I was very generous with the high temp cylicone sealer.Hopefully it does the trick. Now that I think of it, I probably should have scuffed the surface at the ends. I'm going to restore the old pan just in case.

Ummm I've never seen a motor mount like that on the block. Usually see them on the crossmember in the car or truck.

The motor mounts you see are to the 80 camaro I pulled the motor out of. I still have the original V8 mounts for my 66. I'm going to leave the trans off and drop the motor down into the camaro long enough to fire up and work out any bugs. Hopfully I can do it this weekend. Once thats done I'm putting it back on the stand while I save to get the exhaust pipe and mufflers for the truck. My truck is drivable as is with the 292 in it and I dont want to drop the 327 in it if I can,t drive it. I hate being broke. I've been laid off since feb. If anyone wants to donate a 3" exhaust system I'm all for it.

if he was to build a 302 he would have to get some custom bearing spacers or a custom ground crank
302s were high winding and made a lot of power for their cubic inch but you know what they say

why dont you just start it up on the stand make a stand for the radiator that sits in front of it
it should save you a lot of time than putting it in the camaro pulling it back out and putting it in your truck

I have thought about starting it on the stand. But the stand I'm useing is cheap and needs alot of reinforcment to do so. That, and I would have to build a radiator stand and a gauge panal and buy more gauges. I do have plans to build a universal engine test stand. Just not right now (no money). Besides, it's not all that difficult to drop it down in the car and hook it up just to start it. The only thing that does make the task more difficult for me is the fact my work area is outside in dirt and gravel. Man, What I wouldn't give for just a simple small shop.

No. I moved here 9yrs ago and never went back. Cant afford the trip taking the whole family. I will go back and visit somtime soon. My parents and my brothers and sister live there. I sure miss TX.
