time for a new rear end

well over this week end i was on the way to the lake and had some major issue's.... was driving down the road doing about 45 mph when i heard a big bang, sounded like the a- frame hit a pot hole on the free way doing about 110mph, i mean the noise this thing made shocked me, i pulled over and noticed that the truck would no longer move..... so i had it towed home and took the rear end cover off and this is what i found..........[IMG][/IMG].
.
.
.do i need the same rear end off the same kind of blazer or are there better rear end's i can find out there that are inter-changeable with my blazer.....

Re: time for a new rear end

What year is your Blazer? If it's early and has a 12 bolt rear, it's hard to beat. If you have a later 10 bolt rear, you could improve by going to an early 12 bolt. It might be a bit harder to find.

Re: time for a new rear end

i would say it all depends on what you have to spend. there are many "better" rear ends out there, just how much do you need? the last 8.5 in 10 bolt i rebuilt cost me about $400 but half of that was getting the shop to set the ring and pinion. looks like you are going to need a little more than that.

Re: time for a new rear end

I'd run them gears they don't look so bad to me

The 98 rear end is gonna take fab work to make fit like moving the spring perches and then there is the e-brake stuff, shock relocation E.T.C.

My .02 says just find another 12 bolt and slap it in.

Re: time for a new rear end

my dad had some drivetrain issues with his 87 suburban 2wd, so we swapped the rear axle from his 84 into it before we junked the 84. the 87 came from texas and so had a 3.08 final drive. 3.73 gearing makes the most out of that 350tbi. and it is still good on the highway when in overdrive. definitely a good idea to change trans and rear end oil every 50,000 miles (or sooner if you tow a lot). my dad had synthetic gear oil put in because they used the best pieces from the two axles.
