Retrofit AC unit

Couldn't find a thread on this so here it goes. Has anyone tried to retrofit a compact car AC like from a late 90s Saturn etc into one of our trucks? I could source one pretty cheap but, wanted to see in anyone tried it.

I know Southern Air has a setup for $799 but, with 4 kids i need to be more creative money wise =)

Ya I hear ya when it come to spending that kind of money on AC. There has to be a better way. I'm thinking about using the AC out of a 71 sub. Hope someone out there knows somthing easier/cheaper.

Re: Retrofit AC unit

You could consider just brackets, compressor, and a knee freezer. The aftermarket units usually include heat too. You can use your stock heater, and add the AC.

Ive seen the blower under dash units for just over 200 bucks.

Re: Retrofit AC unit

I am pondering the same thing about the AC. There has to be a compact unit that was used in a production vehicle that will work. I have even thought of puttong the unit behind the seat and have ducting run under the seat and console to the dash vents. I will take some measurements and crawl under as many import dashes as i can on my next junk yard trip.

Re: Retrofit AC unit

that's why I was thinking late 90s Saturn. It is a GM but was made like a Japanese ie. everything was more modular in design. Things were added at dealerships like cruise and AC. Should be easier to remove in theory. Time is at a premium with a new 4th child so I was asking for info to cut down on junkyard time. =)

Thanks from Green Country =). Was looking forward to the meeting. Sad it was postponed. Who in Tulsa is heading it up? Maybe I can help.
