Factory Hubcaps on Oversized Wheels?

I've been thinking about this for my 64. I'd really like to go back to chromed factory hubcaps, but would like to put them on some 17, 18, or 20's with WWW's. Anyone done this or have any suggestions as to which wheels might make good candidates? I'll be willing to attempt welding on the clips unless there is a wheel that already has them in the right radius.

Re: Factory Hubcaps on Oversized Wheels?

Cool idea, Frizzle. I'd like to know where to get the big diameter steel wheels. Back in the day, 17'' was it. Now the OEM's have big steel hoops for spares, but I havent seen the wheel shops advertising any. I'd love an 18'' pick-up Rally.

Re: Factory Hubcaps on Oversized Wheels?

I've seen the new Dodge Ram spares. They are 20" but have a bunch of holes that would be a PITA to fill.

Re: Factory Hubcaps on Oversized Wheels?

hmmmmm.... expo

6x135mm ...so close. Ours is 6x139.7mm so it's off by ~2.5mm per hole. Might be a good candidate for a redrill depending on backspacing...

Re: Factory Hubcaps on Oversized Wheels?

I saw a Dodge running the steel wheels and thought they were not very good looking. I dont care for the big positive hump around the lugs. I wonder if they could be reversed?

Re: Factory Hubcaps on Oversized Wheels?

I wanted to do this on my RetroRod 67 project but have since changed my mind. Why?? When I was out west in '07 (hangin' out w/Porter, Dino, & a few other board members @ the GG's show), there was a 67-68 short fleet @ the show w/some solid billet wheels with 'poverty' caps attached. I remembered seeing the truck in print from some show coverage (SEMA??) & thought it looked kind of cool. In person . . .... not so much. The size of the poverty caps looks out of proportion when placed in the center of the large diameter wheels. This particular set-up was even worse because of the 'crude' method used for attaching the caps.

12" brakes look puny behind a 20" wheel; 10 1/8" caps in front of the wheel suffer the same fate IMO.

There's nothin' wrong w/some poverty caps on some 15's though . . ....

I saw a 60-62 c10 swb that was at Billetproof in Washington that was in the parking lot and it had 20 inch steelies. The guy said that he had to drill the holes out. They looked cool.

Re: Factory Hubcaps on Oversized Wheels?

I had PM'd another member who had the Dodge steel wheels, 20's, and he said the backspace was 6''. He used adaptors to bolt them up. FYI

Re: Factory Hubcaps on Oversized Wheels?

17.5" X 5.25" 6 lug were an option on 1960-66 Chev GMC C,K and P10 models. On 3/4+ you could get 19.5" 8 lug. If you could do the adapter thing you could have the center portion of the original 19.5" welded to the ring of the 20" Dodge steel wheel. Weld spacers to your original center then turn the center on a lathe till it matches the inner diameter of the 20" ring. Weld the two together and you've got a wicked original style rim. http://www.dvap.com/ had some 19.5" rims last time I was there. http://www.widewhitewalltires.com/

check out this link: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=244882

IMO the conversion will not look right unless the wheel used hase a (reverse?) offset, the wheels that are on modern vehicles, like the one in post 4 are too flat to look like a stock wheel.

The 'artillery' looking set-up works.

I also like the caps on that ambulance. Kinda/sorta reminds me of the old Caddy hubcaps people used to run on customs back in the day.

I guess the smoothies could be powder coated, like project old school.

Re: Factory Hubcaps on Oversized Wheels?

This Chevy II was at Des Moines Iowa Goodguys last weekend.
It had 17" Wheel Vintiques wheels with '67 flat caps installed on them. I'm not sure how he did it,... but it made for a different look.

Are there any OEM steels that fit in a 16" or 17"

Looks are not that important, I would run spun disc.

Hmm- what about balancing that wheel with a tire on it after all that welding, grinding, and filling those big holes? Worried about it at all? I admire your commitment!!
