holley stumble?
Neighbors car.
scenario- 347 SBF engine, LX body w/5speed, 4.10 geras. canfield heads, Air gap intake. Comp Hyd roller. new holley 650 DP. not the HP series. car snaps when you first touch the pedal then stumbles and blue oil smoke ensues and a 'rich' smell is present all the time. I've already told hime that some out of box holleys are junk, but thought i would give some of guys a chance to chime in. engine holds 6" vacuum at idle. the carb is stock except for #45 power valves. I already thought maybe too large of a squirter/jetting for the low velocity heads. Yes, i already told him to put a Chevy engine in it many time over. :-) crossy

Re: holley stumble?
Lend him a good tuned, working 750 and see if he is convinced.
Kind of sounds to me like he is sucking oil into the PCV system . The blue smoke would trouble me!

Re: holley stumble?
I too would start with dropping the squirter # size by 3 and see how it reacts. This will allow for a slightly longer duration shot.

Re: holley stumble?
6" @ idle? are you sure? what kinda cam? HUGE?
cuz I have a hard time w/ 6" vacuum I'm running 234/244 flat tappet in a 350 and have more than that. have you messed w/ carb already? if so set back to stock settings. try 1.5 turns out on idle mixture screws to start, 800rpm idle speed. if it's not 6", try 6.5 PV's, #28-31 squirters, 65 mains. blue smoke = oil getting into intake somewhere got good intake/head seal? I had a squished intake gasket @ 1 port and it wanted to suck in oil. Also had an intake manifold w/ pinhole casting defect that introduced oil into system what's the timing? 16-18deg initial?

Re: holley stumble?
Thanks crossy, it was a blast... unexpected, but a blast.
I have to agree schralper is on to something. The backup motor for my Nova runs a Crower roller with 268/274 @ 0.050, and .675 lift. IT has over 6" of vacuum in a Holley Proram with a pair of side-by-side 4150's. I know them furds are wierd, but no hydraulic roller should be that low unless it's some exotic custom grind animal. I suspect something mechanical i.e. busted intake seal like mentioned. That would explain the blue oil smoke. You could always make him a deal... Lend him your carb for 1 hour, and it it's the POS furd motor, he has to put put the bumpersticker on... you know the one... Quote:
