Need rearend help fast!
I have a '91 S-10, and a 10bolt off my buddies dad. The rearend measures 54in, and the S-10 is just 48in bp to bp. The S-10 used a 8in wheel with 4.5bs, so if I'm 3in wider it would use all of 7.5 on the same wheel to fit the same. I'm pretty much out of luck I think.
Here's my other question unless you think the 54in rear is ok. I can just get another and biuld it up like this 10bolt. What's best for my little 600hp engine?I know Ford 9's are good but from what year Ford car? Any others? |

You could always buy a bolt in 9in for s10 just my 2 cents

I knew that S-10 was big on bolt-in parts, but never knew they had bolt-in rears? Where do I find these? Biult, or just the shell you can build up yourself? I want a 4.56 gear, posi.

A little bit of info for you.....I see you are measuring backing plate to backing plate. That is not the correct way to measure the width of a differential (rear end). You need to measure WMS to WMS (wheel mounting surface). The backing plate method is not accurate at all because different differentials have wider brake assemblies than others. I would re-measure the differentials you currently have and see where you really are at. You are going to have to know your WMS to WMS measurement if you order a complete differential or just a housing.
A couple of places to look for a bolt in differential would be Currie and DTS www.currieenterprises.com www.drivetrainspecialists.com

My Luv had a 52" wm to wm . I built a 9" for it . I used a 79 truck housing with the big bearings . Moser sells an axle and spool combo for $610 + $125 for a junk yard ford 9" + a gear set . You can get the axles dressed with bearins and retainers for $ 410 and use a 31 spline posi . These were pretty common in Broncos . If you have a mig welder that is hot enough you can buy the jig to narrow a 9" yourself for around $250 . I just used the truck brakes and pulled the studs from the new axles (threaded) to mark the holes and redrill to 5 x 4 3/4" pattern . The truck drums are 11 " and the parts are cheap to rebuiild them . With a bit of shopping for the correct axle you could do it alot cheaper than a pre built . A local guy around here on Craigslist will narrow your 9" for $250 . Moser will respline the factory truck axle for $125 , but they won't last . The last picture is 484 hp with a 210 shot on a drag radial with a respline .

Sorry, forgot to add the two measurements. I measured the drums also but in two measurements because the wheels were still on the S-10.
I'll add the 10bolt is fully built. It was in a 72 Nova that sprayed and everything. It pulled the tires on a sticky set of Hoosiers, It will hold up. It however, has 4.11 gears which I want 4.56, but it has moser axles, Arburn posi, and Richmond gears. It was going to be a dropin, but I'm NOT narrowing a 10bolt 8.1/4 rear. I'll just run the 7 1/4 and I'll try and blow it out for fun lol. |

Also a few different models had 8.5 10 bolts in the S-10 model line in the later years . Sounds like you would be better off selling the axle as it not only fits a Nova , but is a multi leaf bolt in to a first gen Camaro and building a 9" with the money .

It came from a Camaro to start with. I'll sell it and start over. There's a Ford 9in from a roundy round car for sale nearby. He said mid 70's, true posi, and 3.50 ratio, $200.
