Engine mount starter with starter mount bellhousing?

Well I was getting ready to prep the bellhousing I was going to use, and discovered one of the holes for the starter mounting on the bellhousing was broken in half. GRRRR, well I wanted to use the bellhousing mounts to support the 4-speed MT. It looks like I could machine off enough of the housing and still leave the mount intact so I could use my engine mounted starter. I have a Hightorgue starter that I would like to use already and the flywheel that came with the trans. Anyone ever do this? Any input would be appreciated.

I think ChiefRocka did it. You might check the Cheif build thread.

I understand what you are saying but can't see the damage on your bellhousing in the pics.

If you can gut out the housing enough to clear your block mounted starter that would be a good way to go in this case.

I will check out the Chiefs thread. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work. would just make sure I did it clean, nice rounded edges so no stress cracks would develop. Thanks for the input guys.

The other option would be to get another bellhousing and just swap the nose on the starter.

I have a few of these bellhousings if you're interested in going that route.

I have the bellhousing that came with the 81 MT, the bellhousing is aluminum and it has no mounting ears for bolting to the bellhousing crossmember, the trans has a mount on the lower tailshaft like an auto trans. I could use that bellhousing but then I would have to get or make a new crossmember.
