64 brake master cylinder question

Hey guys, I am a 72 burb owner but love all these old chevy trucks! A friend of mine has a 64 c-10 pick up and it has brake issues. I replaced all 4 wheel cylinders and want to replace the master cylinder. I ordered one from the local Napa store and the counter guy claimed to know quite a bit about these trucks, he swears this is the right one for this truck. The part master cylinder I got looks completely different from the one that was on there. The one that I took off has a round reservoir with a spring clip to hold the cap on. The mounting bolts are horizontal. The brakes worked well until the master cylinder and wheel cylinder all seemed to fail at once. The new Master cylinder has a square recover and the cap is held on with a stud and nut. The mounting bolt holes are at an angle. The new master might bolt up but the push rod is too long and you can't even get the bolts started. Any one have an idea what is going on here? Should I just take the square the one back and get the round one? What year is that off of and how do I order it? Is the push rod that is in the truck (looks newer) adjustable enough? Oh I just remembered that the single line that goes to the brakes threads into the masters at different location too. Not that that can't be fixed. Any help you all can provide would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for you time,
Dennis

Re: 64 brake master cylinder question

The one you got at Napa sounds like the original style found on a '63. I always thought they would interchange though. Did you try adjusting the pushrod any? If I'm not mistaken the '64-'66's used the same master. You might try having them look up one for a '65 or '66 and see what it looks like

No, I haven't tried adjusting it yet, I am not sure if there is enough adjustment there. I guess I will try it and if it doesn't work I'll try ordering a different one. Thanks for you your reply!

Re: 64 brake master cylinder question

UPDATE:
I looked up a 63 w/ manual brakes online at Napa. It shows the 1"bore round single bore master cylinder. It looks like the right one. So I'm going to trade it and see if I can get this baby back on the road! Thanks for your help.

Re: 64 brake master cylinder question

The one you have is for the 60-61 maybe even 62 model trucks. They better take it back since they gave you the wrong one. Here print this page and bring it to the know it all. http://www.truckandcarshop.com/trucks60_72/t60_113.html

Re: 64 brake master cylinder question

I've spoken to napa, they have the corect one on the shelf and have agreed to take the wrong one back. The shop I work for does a lot of business with them so they take good care of us! I knew that by posting this here I'd get the right answers. Can't always rely on Napa catalouge.
