any step by step rearend narrowing?

I did a search but didnt come up with anything. I saw a good one for shortening long bed to short and lookin for one to do framework to narrow rearend. I have a pic of what im lookin for if i can get it loaded.

Everything but the narrowing of the rear end housing can be done by a decent mechanic with a welder in your driveway. I would leave the rear end narrowing to a professional shop.

Depending upon how big of a tire you want to run you may not have to mess with the frame at all. A 325/50 should fit into the stock wheel well clear width with the right spring location, axle width & wheel backspacing.

there is no need to narrow the frame, and depending on what you want your wheel offset to be, you dont have to narrow a rear-end. My first rear-end was a stock 8" out of a '60s mustang, I moved my leafsprings to the inside, and used 15x15 wheels with a 7"backspace. My 9" is set up at that same stock mustang width, same wheels, just a home built ladder bar in place of the leafs.

couple of reasons why i did this...

1. didn't have to shell out $ to have a shop narrow a rear-end.
2. easier to sell a stock rear-end, if necessary.
3. I can run just about any size wheel/tire combo and it wont look too weird. I could bolt on some deep dish 10"wide rims with 10.5 radials, race in the radial class and not have it look funny.


when I decided to ladder bar mine, I ordered some chris alston chassiswork coil-overs and got a catalog with them. I used the tech articles in it, as a guide. Now it's all on the web...

frame is now boxed in about 9" with small notch on the bottom side. I'm not layin frame, so no need for a huge C notch.

I think he was referring to the fact that in the photos you posted, the boxing hadn't been completed yet, so all it looked like was a cut frame with no reinforcement.
