fleetside rust protection

got my fleetside bed dismantled, how do you guys get rust converter inside the rear caps on the bedsides? I'm using ospho on all the seams, figuring since its like water-thin it stands the best chance of getting between seams, but getting everywhere inside those end pieces appears impossible. Ditto with the tailgate, actually.

I'd be interested as well. I am doing the phospho as well and used a spray bottle to get most wet on my rear bed pan. The stuff is fairly cheap so I am thinking about putting on some long gloves and just using a sponge to get it in the hard to reach places.

well, '64', as usual my thread is turning out to be a bust. I'm thinking about buying or making some "daubers" like POR-15 sells. and I did buy some mini-rollers (about 6"x1.25") which fit on 1/4" rod, I'm going to run one thru the rolled part of the front bed panel with some POR or Rust-o-leum. My friend suggested we tape-up the bedside end-panels, pour in some paint and the two of us rotate the bedside around. Maybe it's not a big deal but I hate to have it all apart like this and not do something.

Larry, I wont be getting to it until next week sometime but I like your idea of just pouring some paint in it, I would probably thin it out a little with lacquer thinner since the paint is pretty thick. How clean were you able to get it? I would imagine if it hasn't rusted in 40+ years it probably wont now hahaha. Keep me posted though!

has anyone ever tried 3M 's drip check, or at least thats what I think its called , I heard it worked really well??

the insides were surprisingly "clean", looked like "surface rust only" from what I could see, I stuck the sand blaster in every gap and opening there was just to get as much loose stuff out as I could

I would agree and as long as its clean of grease and oil etc it should be just fine. I took one of bedsides last year and just washed it down, give it a wipe with some lacquer thinner and then spray painted it to see if I liked the color, well low and behold a year later that paint is stuck on there like I put it on there yesterday.

I've been meaning to get the picture-posting firgured out, we'll see. It's a rust bucket like the truck and the panel, but it does kinda look cool, is registered, insured and drives (better now that I got the windshield in)

Hey guys, I was reading thru this and was wondering what 'phospho' is??? I'm looking to do something similar when I repair some stuff on my 'burb. Talk about hard to reach places..... Something sprayable that is a converter or similar. Thanx

Phospho is short for phosphoric acid which you can buy from like Home Depot. It is the "rust" converting ingredient found in things like rusty metal primer and also in products from like Eastwood and POR15 that "treat" metal. Basically it takes rust or iron oxide and converts it into an iron phosphate. It works awesome! After you treat a part with it it can leave a scaly finish which will actually not rust at all. What I do after I wire wheel a part I wipe it down with phospho and just leave it bare metal and it wont rust. If you do some research you will some people are against it since it etched the metal and are concerned that it will just keep on etching underneath the paint etc etc. I am just adding that as a disclaimer but I haven't had that experience at all. As a matter of fact paint will stick like velcro. What I do is I treat the hard to reach placed with phospho then I rinse it really good and wipe it again with a damp rag with phospo and then primer it.

This is just my experience anyone else feel free to jump and share more. Hope it helps!

"Ospho" is the brand name of the product I've been using, as 1964C10 said, you should find it in any hardware store or Home Depot, etc. It's as thin as water and can be sprayed, just remember, it's an acid!

Nah, bugs are fine, they're protein (now a bird, esp. one of those big turkey buzzards, would have been a problem), I was having trouble seeing, had to wear goggles, which didn't work well over my bifocals

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if I want to shoot it into blind areas if it has to be neutralized. I have used Duplicolor Rust fix out of a rattle can and it works well, however its expensive for one can and doesnt go very far...we all know there is a lot of area to cover on these old trucks.

Just hosing it down with water will neutralize it, and it also does not do anything to bare metal just to iron oxide or rust. Just dont let it touch concrete it will eat through it like its butter! It is a really weak acid for the rest though, I mean I get it on my hands and it doesn't really feel any different then like lacquer thinner. But gloves would be prudent though!

don't know if it needs to be neutralized, directions say flush with water when used on galvanized, just let dry and wipe if used on plain steel.

well I'm tryin, but I can't seem to get my pictures resized down to 100kb, I'm using 'irfanview', what pixel size are you using (I'm at 500x371)?

I don't resize mine at all, I use photobucket to store my pictures and just post the link here and it shows up in the text. Let me know if you need help getting that up and running. 500X371 isn't very big and details will unfortuantely get lost, remember bigger is better lol

Thanks! They're rochesters, it's been a real trip putting the system together, getting it setup and running decent.

It's tough to decide which to work on sometimes but the truck always takes precedent, it's a daily driver (and I love driving it) and there's ALWAYS something to do on it, in addition to the body work.

I bet they sound great though! I have never done a triple setup like that but I hear it is a real challenge to get them hooked up right.
