I have a 78 Chevy long bed with dual tanks and the left tank is leaking. Where is a good source for purchasing a new tank and what other items do I need? Thanks.

Ive posted the answer to this like fifty times in the last several months. I shopped extensively for these parts and the best price i got was at advanced auto parts.. They were ten bucks cheaper on the tank and a buck cheaper on the straps. I recommend changing the straps too. You will have to buy a package of nuts bolts and washers at lowes or some hardware store cause you will have to drill out the rivets on the old straps that attach them to the mounts. If you go to advanced make sure you take the printout from the computer as they are more expensive in the store computer than in the site online they do price match

Would it be best to just remove the bed and work it from the topside?

I think that if you have the option to have the bed off, the task would be TONS easier! You can do it without removing the bed, but access is pretty tough to the top of the tank.

there is no left or right tank they are interchangable... if you can get the aftermarket tank ( and they are all made overseas and shipped here from asia) for the cheapest price youre getting the same tank/quality anyplace..
When i checked autozone they wanted to charge shipping to the store Advanced had it shipped overnight no extra charge to their store

I bought mine at a local auto parts store. Most of them are right around $90-$100. The one here locally didn't have it in stock, but didn't charge anything to have it shipped. Also there have been a few people on here getting the 87 tank. It has baffles in it to help the fuel sloshing around as much.

I shopped my tank for my '87 and the best price that I found was from Rock Auto. It was cheaper to buy it from them and they shipped it right to my front porch in 3 days. Just give them a look...you may be suprised. And like John said, it may be in your best interest to upgrade to the '87 tank because of the "anti-slosh" baffle inside the tank which will allow you to actually use all of the fuel in the tank. Just my .02

I second www.rockauto.com I ordered 2 tanks from them, and it was cheaper to have them both shipped to me than it would have been to get them from Autozone or Advance Auto.

*** Edit - one 20 gallon tank shipped to me would be $93.56 from rockauto.com. That's the same price from Autozone, but then there is tax on top of that.

One other question- I believe long bed trucks have 20 gallon tanks instead of 16 gallons, is that right????

Just got to check. Most longboxes had the 20 but I have heard some had 16s.They are no left or right one works for both sides. Yes you pretty much have to get new straps cause the other ones are usually shot. I did mine on the '86 from the bottom with the bed on. If you can take the bed off and do it I would say just go ahead and do both if you can and get it outta the way. I got mine from O'reilys for like 90$ I also got new rubber and clamps for the vent and filler hose cause the other ones were nasty!

How 'bought a junk yard? It may not be new but it will probably be cheaper, and genuine, American made GM.

Here in CA, the wrecking yards have to remove the tanks before you can pull parts from them. Anyhow, Lord knows what were in the tanks and for how long before they got to the wrecking yard.

most junkyards knock a hole in the tank to empty the fuel too. the other issue is why buy another half rotted tank to replace your fully rotted tank.

Well, my $600 '79 came with two nice not rusty tanks. Depends on the truck I guess. I didn't know they put a hole in 'em though...
