found 700R4, need some opinions

hey guys,

I have a 66 short/fleet with 327/Powerglide combo. I'm looking to eventually switch to a 700R4. I came across this one last night on Craigslist, but i have no idea if it's a good deal. What would you suggest for the torque converter? my truck is basically stock, & i'm just looking to make a nice cruiser (in-town/highway)...

and from reading, i understand the driveshaft would need to be shortened...where would i look to have that done?

also, do you think i'd have any problems getting rid of my Powerglide if I switch to the 700R4?

here's the ad:

http://pensacola.craigslist.org/pts/1433690440.html

thanks for any info/opinions

He does not list WHAT was rebuilt or what parts were used, and because its a "0 miles" on rebuild theres no proof it works. Not a terrible price if its a good quality rebuild but I would look closely at what was done.
The 700 should handle the motor fine, and you will not need a high stall or anything for the tq converter, but a modest stall converter might not be a bad idea (they do not cost much more).
You shouldn't have any trouble getting rid of the 'glide.

You need to run the numbers and make sure what yr it is if its 89-92 your good if older it has some weaker parts inside and you need to me=ake sure it was a v8 trans from the start. See if you can get more info on the trans before you buy. It will go nicely behind the 327 and look for around 1800-2000stall just right for the street and you might have to move the trans x-member back and shorten drive shaft. Also dont forget the TV cable it needs to be adjusted correctly or it will burn up.

Denny's driveshaft is a reputable shop - link below. Also a link for measuring what you need to tell the shop making it (Denny's or not). Somebody might also know a stock driveshaft out of another vehicle that will fit - which would be a less expensive option. Good luck.

I agree.....also with the 700R4 you have the option of installing the wiring for the converter lockup. That drops your rpm slightly more. You can buy kits for it for not too much $$.

One glitch with the F body transmissions is the started to switch to electric speedometers around 86. Not sure when the trucks started making the switch.
