new apache owner

hi, i just picked up a 59 apache short bed fleetside and was wondering if anyone could take some pics of the stock parking brake assy in the truck. it was removed by the previous owner but im kinda sketched about it rolling away if i park it on a hill.

and also i have a 67 nova rear end and was wondering if i needed the nova or apache rear section of the parking brake cables

any help would be cool. thanks

Aloha from the frozen tundra. And welcome to the forums. There is a wealth of info here amoungst the members. Unfortunately I can't help you with your question. My 58 has a vacuum operated E-brake from an old caddie. I think the cable attachment at the rear brake is quite universal with GM products so it probably doesn't matter which cable you hook up to that Nova rear. Someone will chime in with more info for you.

You would use the nova cables and get some cable connectors and short makeup cables like the picture.
That way you can use the stock ebrake handle and the new rear

All of the parts i the photo above are basically flat bar if they are missing and could be fabbed in an hour with a drill and vice. If you need the stuff at the front of the truck and under the dash I still have that and do not need it. I converted to a 74 truck foot set up and kept the part in the photo above.

cool, guess i gotta find some nova cables. i have the hand brake part and it looks like theres a cable running from it into the fire wall but i gotta look under the truck to see what is missing

should be a hand rachet assembly under the dash on left side. It attaches to a rod that goes thru the firewall to a pivot assemble on the top of the drivers side frame rail. A cable attachs to the pivot arm and runs down the inside frame to a wheel pivot then to the arm in the first pictures.

the assy thats pictured, is that under the cab? my truck is parked on the road right now but my dad was pulling the hand brake while i looked underneathe and could see something similar moving. my rear end has the cables but they look toi be a little short for the stock mounts on the frame. i thin i'm missing the part where the rear set of cables meet that assy.

also my steering feels real loose and i always have to play with the steering when i drive. what are somethings i should look for that may be worn out? i have the stock leaf suspension still. thanks

Yes its just behind the cab under the truck. I had to get two short cables made to connect the stock cross bar to the C connectors because my ford cables were just about 8 inches short. I also had to make two brackets to hold the cable housing in place on the frame

Re: steering. If you can turn your steering wheel when stopped without the tires moving either your box needs adjusted or is worn out OR the pitman arm or tie rod ends are worn. Have someone look at the pitman arm (behind drivers front tire) while you turn the steering wheel. If the steering wheel moves and the arm does not its the box. If the arm moves but the tires don't its the joint(s) in the linkage.

To adjust the box clean off the crud and find the bolt with a screw looking stud coming out of the middle. Loosen the bolt and turn the screw until the play goes out of the steering wheel. Back off a smidge and tighten the bolt while holding the screw stud in place. Move the steering through its range of motion to make sure there is no binding. I do this with the wheels off the ground so the resistance does not give false adjustment feel. If you cannot adjust it then is is worn inside to a point it cannot be adjusted out.

from what i could see it looks like there is play by the pitman arm but i'll try check out the steering box in the day time. hope its just the box needing adjustment, dont want to really spend money on this front end as i plan to swap do a ifs swap shortly.

thanks, the truck was painted by the previous owner a few years ago but theres still some rust repair to do.

just got the parking brake hooked up today, gonna make it a little nicer like the above pics tmrw.
