Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

OK, if you saw my other thread, I bought the Pypes Violator Exhaust system from Summit. It is supposed to be for C10 pickups 64-72 I believe, and will fit longbeds as well as shortbed trucks.....

Kind of a long thread, plus there are 2 video's of before and after.....

First, I ordered the system on Tuesday from Summit.
I get home Wednesday, and her is what I find waiting for me....

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

They recommend laying out the exhaust on the floor and putting it all together to make sure it fits and that there are no problems.....

All the pipes are slip fit, and slide together fairly easily.....They are labeled, but the labels do not match the installation sheet.....

My new x-pipe

The shiny new SS Violators.......NICE!!!

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

They recommend you jack the truck up and start from the back.....telling you to center the x-pipe, and then run out from there.........ehh, I ended up starting from the front, running the pipes from the headers to the x-pipe, and then working on installing the mufflers.....

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

After getting the muffler and the x-pipe installed on the drivers side, I look around and realize I lost some clamps.....Then I read the instruction sheet. They only give you 8 clamps for the whole system..........I was thinking you need maybe 12....it would have been nice.....

Plus the sheet was very vague about which joints you actually clamped, and which you left just fit together......

Muffler with the hanging strap attached....

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

Then I got to the part about installing the pipe over the rear axle......You have to trim this to length......No problem I got that done......then you attach the tailpipe they provide.......

Nope, I do not like how this looks.....

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

So I finally got the entire exhaust minus the tailpipes installed.......and cranked it up.....

Sounded pretty good.....

I will be having some pipes either re-bent or new ones made for my truck....

All in all, it sit under the truck, and looks pretty good for the most part. I will be MIG welding the joints this weekend, so I really did not need the clamps, but I still think they should include more, especially with all the joints you have and with what you pay for the kit.....

here is how it looks from the side.....

another....

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

That sounds pretty good. I agree that it might be better sound quality outside. If you were to turn the mufflers verticle as per the instructions, the tail pipes would be a little higher. But I do like the mufflers horizontal better also. Could you raise the mufflers a bit, or would the pipes hit the crossmember? That would raise the tail pipes some also.

Thanks for taking the time to do this review. This is something we can all benefit from.

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

maybe you shouild call Pypes and tell them of your experience so they can make some changes. If we don't tell them they will not know and they do like our input. http://www.pypesexhaust.com/

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

Nice job on the review. I can't tell a lot of difference between the 2 systems; alot of frequencies bouncing around the garage. Seems the whole system is very low (as far as ground clearance), too.

You didnt mention if you had headers or manifolds. Just curious.

If you look at the 2nd post of picture, you can see it hooked up to the collector. I say Headers...

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

I can't raise it up any more, it is almost hitting the driveshaft crossmember.....

I have full length headers, so they come to the bottom of the frame rail......I had thought about getting shortys, but since I am not going any lower, they will be fine..

I will try to get a video of it outside, but it will be tomorrow....I've been busy working on plumbing under the house......

Thanks,

Chad

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

OK here is an outside vid of the truck running with the new mufflers....

I will be raising them up probably about 2 inches at least to get the maximum clearance I can....

Please ignore the wiring mess under the dash.....I'm still cleaning up the wiring and working on the light switch......And where I placed the camera....I propped it up on my sons mustang......

Re: Pypes Exhaust Installation/Review

I also raised my timing a little bit after that vid....while the cam-like rumble sounds good, it really did not run that great.....So it sounds a little smoother now....

It really doesn't sound that loud in person, my computer speakers must be horrible.....
