Shifter Options
I have a 56 chev auto (350 turbo) It has a BM quik shifter in it. Great for going in a straight line. I would like to replace it with something more user friendly. Is there something from a wrecker that would work or should i be looking at Lokar or Hurst? Please advise

Re: Shifter Options
I have a 7oor4 in my 55 and I'm going to run this Lokar Shifter. Probably the best one I've found. I'm getting mine tall (22") but they make a smaller and a taller one. It's push button on the top. A little pricey though at $270

Re: Shifter Options
I've been looking into the Gennie shifters for the '52 /4L60. I found them at hotrodexpress.com for 200 bucks. I like the way they select the gears better than the push botton Lokar.

Re: Shifter Options
I have the same need for hauling 2 kids in car seats in my 49, so I went with an auto s10 column, and will use Lokar's shifter linkage to hook that up to my 4L60. I thought I would modify the original cable shifter...but for $50 I think the Lokar linkage is hard to beat.

Re: Shifter Options
I have a locar and im not very happy with it. The button sticks at times and you have to push it between odd gears.

Thats too bad. My friend has it and has never had one problem with it. Sounds like you bought a lemon.

Re: Shifter Options
I had a Lokar in my '62, so maybe it was the 500+hp, but that push button would rattle like crazy going down the road, which drove me crazy. Had to drive around holding the shifter with my thumb on the button just so it wouldn't rattle. Went with a Gennie in the '48...I really like the way it gates through the gears much like a column shifter and NO button.
Anyway, just something to consider. Although it sounds like with the need to haul 2 kids around converting to a column shifter would be the way to go though...

Re: Shifter Options
My build thread shows what I did. column shift with 350TH. I used a B&M cable and lower brackets and fabbed one for the firewall. Make sure the level pivot dim is the same on the trans and column. Before I had a floor shifter but it got old having the kids in the middle of the seat kicking it out of gear and fighting their feet.

Re: Shifter Options
I've got the lokar in mine and it works great. I'm running a bench seat and am changing the shifter to a double bend one so it gives the middle person a bit more room.

My 53 has a 700R4
It also has a tilt column out of some sortof GM car or pikup maybe the 86 Blazer that donated the chasis all the origional linkage is hooked up and it works perfectly so why not go with a shift column ? Gene Sharp |

Re: Shifter Options
That is the one I have, love the shape of it. I bought a new knob for mine yesterday, maybe it wont stick so much.

Re: Shifter Options
I'm trying to think since I haven't driven my truck for 4 plus months.
Should have to push button to get out of neutral going from neutral to reverse maybe OD to 3rd. Hmmm time to go out to the garage.... Which knob did you have that was giving you trouble? I know my 8 ball had a bit of stickyness to it but I really found once it was adjusted and set up it worked great on my 700R.
