Which Transmission?

Hey guys. I'm back in 'project mode' with the '64 and I'm really yearning to get rid of the granny 4speed in the truck. Can y'all point me in the direction of what transmission would work in place of it? What I want is a 4speed manual, that will work easiest with the sbc (currently a 283 but I'm looking at a 327).

If you're still running the original bellhousing trans mounts, the easiest thing would be to pull the transmission and slap in a Richmond Super T10 or a Muncie passenger car 4 speed. Depending on what driveshaft arrangement you have you may need to lengthen the shaft and maybe change the yoke. Some use a slip joint and some use a bolt on arrangement.

Depending on your HP plans for the engine you might be able to get away with a Saginaw 4 speed. They can be had for less $$ than a Super T10 or any of the Muncie's. But then the Saginaw won't hold up to much HP and abuse.

I'll be running a 4 speed Saginaw, but only because I got a smokin deal on it; I'll have to be a little easy on it.

Muncies and T10s are better, but expect to pay the big $$

A Muncie in good shape will go for at least $700-$800

Yeah I'd take almost anything that bolted up right now actually. For some reason I loath the granny first, and then the super wide spacing of the three usable. I almost entertained the idea of an automatic, but then the booze wore off.

I feel kind of the same way, but there are no real easy or affordable options

The Chevy T-5s are pretty weak and not worth the trouble (imo anyways, but I'm sure there are fans out there)

There is a 886? 4sp O/D tranny out there, but I think they are pretty hard to find

The Tremec TKO500 and 600 trannys are great, but very expensive and are pretty big

I have seen Saginaw 4's with a 3sp OD added.
But a Saginaw is just as weak as a T5.

I just want to go to the Hunnert Car Pileup without floating a loan.

I'll see you there,,if you make it..I think el paucho(sp) on the HAMB is runnin a t5 in his crazy hp f100,,if that helps

i agree....T5. Best bang for the buck especially with 300 HP

there is acouple of other options. aint never seen one but aa makkes an od unit that fits between the clutch housing & trans. bout 3" wide or so. then in the 80s ford made an od trans that was like the gm saginaw that was behind the diesels, but it was based on the old toploader. there were others that were aluminum but i wouldnt use them. the toploader was a good one, i ran one in my 72 nova for a long time & it worked great. used a b&m scatershield that had the chevy / ford pattern on it. ford put them in trucks behind small blocks with a 3.00 gear & the engines just bogged. they liked a 3.55 or 3.73 lots better. worked for me!

Not sure if you'd have to shorten the driveshaft and such with the T-5

I can say that I would def pic a T-5 before I'd pay some of the $$ people want for their Saginaws
