That sounds about right. It's funny, just the smell of it takes you way back. One of the first completes I did was a Courier in silver. I got higher than a kite, and was hooked.

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne
Update , finally after many setbacks the swap is in process. Took over the garage of my new place and is now officialy my shop, taking extreme caution not to soil the floor. I got alot done today drained all the fluids and removed the front clip; hood, front bumper, fenders, wheel wells, radiator, and core support. Luckily their was no rust present other than on the wheel wells. I rather replace them from the wrecking yard than investing alot of time and effort fixing the rust. Will go at it again tomorow.

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne
Update on my uncles truck. Just about finished body & paint hopefully will take it to the paint booth this week end. LS1 is seated plumbed and wired and sounds awsome just off the headers.

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne
On my uncles truck he used a new harness from http://ls1wiringharness.com/index.html. Every connection is clearly labeled and the harness is very easy to install, feature 20 Gage thick jacket wire, they also offer fiber glass sheath. The build up and quality of materials was superb worth the $$. I belive they dont offer free PCM programming.
ON my truck and 2 others I used Jes Bubb at http://www.wait4meperformance.com/ for much less than buying a new harness $350 shipped, they reworked and modified the existing harness to youre needs like weather you want to run smog or not. Every connection was also clearly labeled but it takes more time and talent to install, you need to add relays and fuse block. They also offer lifetime PCM programming. For the best outcome on a seriously modified engine you will need a qualified tuner in the are and get a proper Tune Last edited by smokedat; 04-05-2010 at 12:49 PM. |

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne
I stripped the fire wall and started removing the paint. I will be smoothing out the fire wall for asthetics. I now have a situation as I started to remove the wiper motor and AC/heater box I realized that the fire wall looks better without these items, so now I am tempted to smooth out the entire fire wall from side to side. Another benefit of not running AC/heater is that I will be painting my radiator core support and if i dont install the AC condensor you will be able to see right throug the grill the paint and aluminum radiator. Besides once I finish this project i will not be driving in the rain and as for the AC/ heater I could lower the windows or wear a jacket.
Here a few pics of a smooth fire walls, what I am trying to accomplish. Any input on this one? |

If you don't plan on driving in the rain it shouldn't be a problem at all. Just coat your windshield with rain-x just in case you get caught out somewhere and it starts to rain on you unexpectedly. Too bad we aren't closer. My newest project truck needs all the parts you are taking off. It has no HVAC system at all.

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne
And as far as A/C, heat, & defrost, you could put a Vintage Air set up in the truck...it all would tuck up under the dash without issue. You could run the lines down low to keep them out of the eye line, if it became an issue that is

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne
this is what i'm working on now. i'm keeping the a/c box, wiper motor, brake booster and master cylinder will all be painted black. everything else is getting smoothed and filled and painted body color like the core support. including that awful seam down the middle. i want mine to appear stock but super clean and functional. just my 2 pennies

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne
Still working on the rust repair so far I've shaved the coners on the bed and left gas tank. The technique I use in order to prevent warping is to blow air after each tack, and when grinding the welds I go with a ruff grit like a 60 or so to chew the weld faster and not create so much heat. So I desided not to run AC & heater or wipers I will fabricate a sheet and place over the fire wall in order to get the smooth look without going crazy with the filler and relocate the wires to hide them. I will also fill in the inner fenders and the radiator core support.

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne
Looks great. Good job.
Which model of the Lincoln MIG do you have? Mine is too small to do more than sheet metal with and I would like to upgrade. I like my Lincoln square wave TIG but it just doesn't lend itself to sheet metal work with needing both hands to weld, no free hand to hold the work piece with.
