Re: rear main ?
First you will have to drop the oil pan, then the oil pump if its mounted to the rear main cap. Then you can remove the rear main cap where half of the seal is seated and the other half is on the block under the rear main crank journal, thats assuming its a two piece rear main.you will then need to push that part of the remaining seal out from under the crank be careful not to slip and scratch the crank. If your have an engine maintenance manual or rebuilding manual it will guide you through it.This is diffenantly not for the faint at heart, though not extremely difficult to do,I would study up on the process before attempting as you do expose critical parts of your power plant while doing so.Which could lead to much bigger problems later on down the line.I'm all for learning more and saving a few bucks, but please do be aware.

Re: rear main ?
If you choose to do this seal change yourself look carefully at the lower half of the rear main bearing to check for excess wear, if you see copper replace it with a quality TRW, Federal mogul Clevite , check the back to see if it is marked for oversize. Don't leave the rear main bearing out for long. Make sure you know how to use a torque wrench propperly before you attempt this repair and as stated above good manuals are well worth the money

Re: rear main ?
Just did one Friday. Here's how it went in my truck, it is an automatic 2wd though:
1) Drain oil, remove pan bolts 2) Remove fan 3) Unbolt engine mounts 4) Hoist engine up 3" or so 5) Slide oil pan out 6) Remove oil pump 7) Remove lower rear main bearing cap 8) Remove seal 9) Clean, clean clean 10) Replace seal (offset a bit) 11) Replace cap w/ seal (offset a bit, small amt of sealant, torque to 70 ft lbs) 12) Replace oil pump, torque to 115 in lbs 13) Replace gasket and pan 14) Replace mount bolts and fan Clean up giant mess!
