Preparing to Part Storm Damaged One Owner 1968 GMC 2500 CST

Well folks, I've decided not to repair my storm damaged 1968 GMC 2500 CST bought new by my father and will soon begin to part it out because it appears to be worth considerably more in parts than complete. Hurricane Ike collapsed my barn onto the truck damaging the cab, hood and right fender. It still starts, runs, drives and the AC works as it should but proper repair would require a new AC cab and I have decided not to do this at my age.

I haven't decided whether to use eBay or the Parts for Sale forum here but in either case I need advise about parts value. I'll start with the easy stuff.

Complete, original 327 4V engine. Running and fogged when removed 20 years ago. Stored inside. Needs rebuilt.

1980 350 4 bolt 4V engine from 3500 series. Complete, running with approximately 40K miles.

Turbo 400 transmission. Completely rebuilt (not needed) about 2000 miles ago. Rebuild included everything including all bushings. No problems.

4.10 Dana 60 positraction rear axle. Complete drum to drum. Brakes and seals replaced and bearings packed about 2000 miles ago. No problems or leaks.

Complete, undamaged buddy bucket seats in very good condition with or without rest of matching interior.

Complete AC system including new (not rebuilt) Delco compressor and original compressor with good charge label, needing shaft seal. AC is currently properly charged with R-12 and works as it should.

Complete, undamaged bed with tailgate. Never any rust. With or without bed liner.

Documentation package including owners manual, warranty plate, copy of build sheet, service manual, parts manual, TH400 manual and original sales documentation.

Also would like valuation advise for complete truck as is. I've attached a photo. Hopefully it works.

That' all for now.

Thanks for any and all advise.

Damn, I stayed in my home during Ike and did not have that damage. I am 20 miles north of where it made landfall.

I am interested in Bed if you are deciding to sell it on here.

Sorry to hear that, looks like it was a really nice truck. Goodluck with which ever route you take on it. Its a shame you couldn't fix it.

Re: Preparing to Part Storm Damaged One Owner 1968 GMC 2500 CST

Nice looking truck. The seats are worth $800 - $1,000.
No idea on the bed, you don't see a lot of mint long beds for sale.
There are a ton of parts there you can sell.

The grille is a 71/72 piece, and the front bumper appears to be a 67-70 Chevy bumper.

It isn't that bad as far as repairs go. A lot of people replace way more than that when they restore their trucks. You are a few steps ahead as you have a nice interior and drivetrain. Find a new cab and front clip and go.

Re: Preparing to Part Storm Damaged One Owner 1968 GMC 2500 CST

71swb:

I had the front bunper rechromed about 20 years ago not knowing that one did not get ones original bumper back at the time and not knowing the difference between Chevy and GMC bumpers.

The grill is original and has never been out as the truck has never been damaged until the barn collapsed.

I've held on to it for 18 months (inside) since the barn fell hoping to find someone that wanted to restore it rather than part it out but I do not do body work and have decided that I will not restore it myself for age and space reasons.

As for value as is i would say you could probably get $1000

Obviously parting is the way to go.

You are asking about a lot of parts pricing.

Watch the parts board daily to see what stuff is going for. It does vary with the economy.

Get some more pics of it the way it is and list it for sale as a whole on the board before parting. If you can get close to what you have to have without wasting time parting it i would sell it whole.

I like the truck. Hope you can sell it whole. Let me know when you come up with a price as I may be interested. I would also like to know if it has an original 68 tailgate. Good luck with it. I would have to look at it before I could give you an est. on what i think its worth.

Re: Preparing to Part Storm Damaged One Owner 1968 GMC 2500 CST

Thanks, Chuck.

All parts aside from the rechromed Chevy front bumper, the 350 engine, the new AC compressor and incidental service items are original. I have the original 327 4V engine and the original AC compressor. The 327 needs rebuilt and the compressor needs a shaft seal.

I can email more photos if it will help with valuation.

Re: Preparing to Part Storm Damaged One Owner 1968 GMC 2500 CST

Thanks to all for the responses.

I'll probably have to put off dismantling it for the time being as I did not get started on it early enough and I'm now into mowing season. It will likely be fall before I can get back to it.

If you're not hurtin' for money, that truck is way too nice to part out. Knowing the truck's entire history adds to it's value greatly, IMHO.

Not to trample all over the sentiment issue of your unfortunate mishap, but i would be interested in the buddy buckets if you decide to sell. Just puttin in my two cents but you should fix it... it doesn't seem to hard of a job just a new cab, hood and fender.

Andy:

Thanks for the sentiment. I've considered the emotional issues and have decided that I will not restore it at this stage in my life. I prefer to sell it complete to someone who would but the reality is that it is worth much more for parts than complete even with the documentation.

Sorry, guys, but I did not get started it early enough this spring. It will now probably be late fall before I can get back to it.
