Best Rust Penetrator?
I,m about to do some tear down and was wondering what everyone recommends to loosen rusty bolts before i break them and my knuckles. WD 40 seems to be most popular but Ive seen everything from 3 to 12 a can

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
a 3foot extension on the rachet works wonders// a torch is great//a spray bottle filler with vinegar(about $3 a gallon) works good// sometimes the most effective is to turn the wrenches clockwise and just snap the bolts

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
I've had good luck with this - especially if you can let it soak a good long time...

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
I am NOT a fan of WD-40 as a penetrating oil, PB Blaster is far better.
cdowns has a point though about breaking them though, as long as it's a bolt/nut situation, it works well.

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
There was a showdown of products a while back I saw on the net about penetrating oils. The winner was actually a mix of 50% acetone and 50% ATF. Worked better than PB Blaster and Aerokroil (sp?)

I read one time that GM sells the best stuff for this. The kicker is that it sells for about 8 bucks a can.... LockDoc

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
if people would just b openminded enough to use good old vinegar at about $3 a gallon they wouldnt b spending $30-$80 a gallon on stuff that is marginal at best

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
I've tried them all except the vinegar. I've found out that none seem to be superior to the other on extremely rusted nuts and bolts.
The idea of breaking them is okay on the smaller bolts where you can do it without ruining any sheet metal. It's a bit harder to do and probably not a good idea if the bolt has a welded nut- as in the fenders/wheel wells. Lately I've been using diesel fuel sometimes mixed it with a slight amount of either oil or trans fluid. I put in a spray bottle and for what it's worth, has worked just as well as the others. |

PB rust penetrator is the best I've seen.
Let it soak, &/or use heat before trying to break loose. With aluminum motorcycles etc. Sometimes you can just give it a "bump" in the tighten direction then snap back to loose mode. I'm sure like everything else. You'll get it. Used it on a lot of Vintage motorcycle restoration work, and of course my ole' 72 raised in Utah. (salt roads) Theres also acids for large jobs but california epa took most of the good stuff. |

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
Heat and candle wax.
Get your wrench all set to go; heat the bolt with a propane torch, then hit it with a candle. Put the wrench on & screw the bolt out.

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
I'm interested in this vinegar trick. Are you just putting straight vinegar in a spray bottle then spraying the bolts? Do you let it sit a while?

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
I can vouch for the vinegar trick. I just poured 2 gallons in a bowl and put some old rust 72 parts in it for about a week. Took them out and they look new. I just washed them off and primed. Amazing.

I exclusively use Kroil myself, but I've only ever heard good things about PB Blaster too.

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
My dad was a big fan of "tightening" the bolt just a hair, then it would loosen. It works especially well on screw heads.
I used to be a fan of WD 40 until i got a can of PB Blaster. that stuff is amazing. now it's all i use. |

My favorite spray is In-Force from BG Products. Its expensive but it really works. It foams.
The best thing was posted earlier. Canning Wax & a Torch!!

Re: Best Rust Penetrator?
Yeah the vinegar trick has been used for years nothing real new. Most of the chemical companies I have worked for have been mixing up their own version for years cause it cheap.
