I have 14 thumbs

OK, not really, but I do have a quaestion for all of y'all old pros.

When I am making a part it seems like I have extra thumbs, can't see anything and nothing stays where I want it to when I have a mask and gloves on. Out of frustration I finaly ended up tacking the parts where they go barehanded and looking away at the instant I pull the trigger. Once the parts are tacked in place I grab the mask and run what I laughingly call a bead.

Is this something that frustrates everyone, is it just matter of getting good gloves and a better mask or am I just a tard-monkey? (Maybe everything? lol)

Dude, get some welding magnets. Don't skimp- the Harbor Freight ones have very weak magnets in them.

I agree with ^^^. I had some harbor freight ones, and hey were just ok. Till I used some good ones and realised how much mine sucked. These will help tremendously when tacking things together so you can finish welding

Re: I have 14 thumbs

I have found an auto darkening helmet helped me a lot. I am still no welder but can melt metal together.

I didn't even know about the magnets... Now I have something new to buy! lol

I'm learning as I go. Until I got into this my last welding experiance was in ag/mechanics in HS (bit more than 30 years ago.)
