Repair Gmc Grille

I bought a 72 gmc, and the grille has been painted black. The paint is chipping, and I can see what looks to be nice chrome under it.

I was wandering if anyone knows how to get the paint of without damaging the original grilles finish?

Could also try soap and water and the least abrasive scotch brite or sandpaper you can find

Re: Repair Gmc Grille

Alright thanks guys that gives me a few ideas to try. I think I am going to be lazy and not take the grille off so I will probably try the soap and water first.

Re: Repair Gmc Grille

I actually have ALOT of experience removing the black paint on GMC grilles, DEFINATELY use the Acetone with a soft rag and it will take a 1/2hour-1 hour to clean a entire GMC grille using it, if you use mineral spirits or paint thinner plan on 4-5 hours at least as the mineral spirits and paint thinner softens & liquifies the paint very very slowly compared to acetone which penetrates it quickly, using soap & water with a scotch brite pad I hate to think how long it would take. The acetone will not hurt the chrome finish

Re: Repair Gmc Grille

Acetone works great but FWIW I actually like lacquer thinner (which is not mineral spirits as seems to be common belief in this area) best. It evaporates a bit slower than acetone so you get a longer contact time. You can get it at NAPA. Bought 5 gallons probably 5 years ago for $35 with work discount. Don't know what it goes for these days. Works well with a tooth brush to clean aluminum manifolds as well as many other de-greasing/cleaning projects.

No matter what solvent you use BE CAREFUL!! It's very flammable and you need to have real good ventilation. Pick up rags/paper towels and properly dispose, they will easily ignite even when dry if you're welding and a stray spark hits them.

Also 0000 (00 of you're careful) steel wool and mothers polish works real well to get some shine.

Re: Repair Gmc Grille

use Acetone, had this same problem with a 71 Chevy grille shell that came on my truck.
Acetone's where it's at.
