Fuel filter wont stay full?

66 short step, rear stainless tank, elect inline pump, runs great for hours and then engine dies, the fuel filter will be emty and the pump is running, or at least humming. let it cool for 5 mins it will slowly put fuel in(not fill) the filter and run fine. Any thoughts guys?

Re: Fuel filter wont stay full?

check the feed from the tank @ the tank. disconnect the line that feeds your fuel pump& put a little air pressure to it to blow it out. just did this to my fuel tank. same symptom to the tee. funny thing is its a brand new tank with a little debris in the pick up tube! @ no extra charge! lol, took me 1500 miles to figure this out. best of luck, Pat ps, make sure your vent is open and not clogged. now the fuel filter is full of fuel& she runs like she should. cheers, Pat

Re: Fuel filter wont stay full?

What kind of electric pump is it? A small Mr gasket / Bosch parts store special will do this when it gets hot. Mine did this and I replaced it with a good Holley Red and have not had a problem since. Just road tripped it to the beach ( not too far about 45 miles one way) and ran great no problems. Before it acted like it was vapor locking.

Re: Fuel filter wont stay full?

I agree with the others; junk in the tank or the pump.

Re: Fuel filter wont stay full?

The strainer on the pickup tube in the tank has a micro screen on it...it sounds like it is clogging while the pump is sucking fuel from the tank and when the engine dies/starves, the sediment settles from the strainer and the engine will start again. The fuel filter will not be full at any time, but fuel will flow.

I had the same issue on a '64 GMC, so I removed the strainer from the pickup tube and installed a fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carburetor. The truck ran like a champ after this change.

Re: Fuel filter wont stay full?

Mine did the same thing, pump was under the hood on firewall across from were the stock pump mounts on block. After doing some reading on this forum i learnd that most electric pumps are ment to push not pull fuel, so i mounted it as close to the tank as i could and haven't had a problem sence.

i agree, depending where and what type of pump you have. holley reds are pushers, blue's are pullers i believe. or maybe try a regulator to keep the line full. of course this is all assuming its not a clogged tank.

Aside from the debris in the lines/tank, my question would be - does your fuel line run close to the exhaust or headers? If there is a pattern with hot and cool cycles, it might be that you are experiencing vapor lock.
