6.0 LS2 LQ4 in my 72 GMC Super Coustom 1500

I'm so glad we finally have this subforum!!! I will be starting the LS2 swap into my 72 GMC with 200 4R trans. Can't wait to get started. Just trying to round up the parts I need. I have a 01 6.0 that's not DBW. It's still shrinkwrapped on the pallet. I also have ECE motor mounts and still havent decided on headers yet. I want cruise control though, so I need to figure that 1 out. I cant type well I have a cast on my right hand.

I'm running a newer 6.0 but am also going with a 200-4r. Mine will be carb'd tho...not efi.

Re: 6.0 LS2 LQ4 in my 72 GMC Super Coustom 1500

Just FYI - if your 6.0 is a 2001 it's an LQ4, not an LS2. The LQ4 is a Gen III truck engine, and the LS2 came out in 2004 or 2005 in the Vettes and GTO's and is considered a Gen IV.

Here it is. Finally started working on it. Hope to have it installed within a few weeks. I have already ordered the new oil pan 19212593 and DT 324y-c headers.

Re: 6.0 LS2 LQ4 in my 72 GMC Super Coustom 1500

More progress. Now I plan on selling my 200 4r that's currently in my truck and buying a 4L65. I have a 2 piece driveshaft will I have to get a new driveshaft made, and will it have to be 2 piece? Maybe just get the front yoke to fit in the 4L65 welded to my current driveshaft. What to use to adapt my current throttle cable to the cable on the 6.0 LQ4?

Use a throttle cable from a 99-02 6.0l.

Re: 6.0 LS2 LQ4 in my 72 GMC Super Coustom 1500

Why sell the 200-4r for a 4L65e? For computer control?

IMHO the gear ratios(1-2, and 4th) are better on the 200-4r, it can be built to handle as much hp as the 4L65e, and it'll respond quicker to manual shifts with the mechanical shift system. This is something the computer control transmissions...with a electronic shift system just don't seem to do well...even with a tune.

Yes, for computer control, one complete system. I have played with the 200 4r for a long time and still cant get it to shift how I like it. I have the bowtie overdrives bracket and cam adjuster and still not happy with it. I have checked all line pressures and they are fine. It might have been the old 355 motor or maybe the 3.07 rear gear. I have a B&M Shiftplus on my 96 Z71 with 4L60 and like it, so maybe a good tune with it behind the new 6.0 will be better.

Update, Installed last night, waiting on harness from Speartech, new 4L65 trans, fuel pump, adapters and fittings, and headers. The second pic is the fan clearance using ECE mounts. I think I might be able to use the LS fan and original truck shroud. There is 1 1/8" clearance between the rad. and fan.

Re: 6.0 LS2 LQ4 in my 72 GMC Super Coustom 1500

can you take a shot that shows how much space there is between the motor and the firewall for me? I've got the ECE setup and now I'm thinking I might want to kick mine back an inch or so.

Almost 3" I was considering moving mine back too by using the rear most upper holes in the frame but then I wouldnt be able to use 1 of the bottom mounting holes. The 200 4r that is currently still in the truck is about 1 1/2" from mounting to the block. So it might be coming back out.

More progress. It has a 4L 65 behind it now. Button up some wiring, fuel fittings, fill fluids, install Lokar shifter, install shortened driveshaft, drill new trans. crossmember holes and fire. Hopefully Saturday afternoon.

Here's a side pic. What are you guys using for spark plug wires? I don't like the MSD wires I currently have that Doug Thorley recommended. And the Lokar ed-5008 dipstick tube I had to mount on the frame rail, because it wouldn't fit up thru the header and mount to the head or header flange, and Doug Thorley says to use it.

I rebent my stock dipstick tube to fit and rewelded the bracket on where it would bolt to head.

Are those MSD wires with the bendable multi angle plug ends. Thats what I used and liked them.

Sorry, I fabbed up a bracket to bolt to the head and welded it to the rebent dipstick tube. I'm cheap.

I used the TPI parts plates. They are thick and strong and well made and powdercoated. I just had to slot the engine stands and frame a little to get it to set down in there in order to line up the 2 single bolts into mount.
