Oil pan is rotted and leaking...Help
Hi Guys...New to the site and love all the info on here. Need some newbie type help. I have an 85 3/4 ton 4x4 that I just purchased as a project. First fix was the trans....all good now. Next fix is the severe oil leak that the trans guy told me is due to a rotted oil pan. Can I replace the oil pan without having to pull/raise the engine? It looks doable, but I don't want to attempt without checking....Also, any tips for getting a good gasket placement/seal would be very appreciated. Thanks very much

In an 85 you can usually sneak the pan right out. Make sure to get a 1 piece gasket instead of the stock 4 piece setup. The 1 piece gasket is way less prone to leaking.

If you need an extra bit of room to get it clear of the oil pick up, you can use a 2x4 block on a floor jack under the crank pulley. Just unbolt the through bolts on your motor mounts and jack it up a bit. Be sure to watch for clearance on your distributor cap as you go higher.

Re: Oil pan is rotted and leaking...Help
When i did mine, i had to jack the engine up 2-3 inches for clearence and more room to work. I too went with the one peice gasket from fel-pro. I also replaced the pan with a new one. Along with a new pump and pickup for cheap insurance. Painted it orange to make it go faster...
