Steering Shaft Question

Just wanted to confirm... The steering shaft should separate at the joint circled in the picture correct? I am going to try and install my ididit column this week.

The shaft is solid at the point you have circled. The steering shaft is one piece from the rag joint all the way to the steering wheel.

The area circled is merely a clamp that holds a spring against the lower column support.

Shouldn't be to big a deal. Mount the new column and then use the original rag joint and part of the original shaft to connect to the steering box.

Do a search, I have seen other posts on this topic.

I believe it does come off, but reusing it might not be a good idea. A new u joint is about 50 bucks @ www.classicperform.com and are easily installed, not sure you can buy that joint or where you could look. You will have to figure out the size of the splined part and spline count. Since I believe ididit uses gm column set ups, a joint off a newer car/truck may work for you.

Does anyone know if you can go spline (column) to smooth (stock shaft) with a u joint? As you can see from my pic above I have a new rag joint that came with the PS kit and the shaft is in good shape. I would like to just cut the shaft at the old column, slip the new column in and put a joint there. The catch is, the column is splined and the shaft is smooth.

I just installed power steering in my 61 GMC. The area you have circled is a slip joint and it does come apart. It may be held in place with a plastic pin but with enough force it will come apart. I kept the stock column and installed a shaft out of a 81 chevy 3/4 tonne. the shaft from the area you have circled was cut and the donor truck shaft was cut. Then the two were welded together to form a custom length shaft with rag joint on one end that fit 81 chevy power steering box and spline on the other to fit 61 column. There was no need for a u-joint as shown in your picture.

60-62 do come apart in that area... 63 to 66 are one piece from the rag joint at the box all the way up to the wheel...

60-62 are a 2 piece column,and 63-66 are a 1 piece.

They make a multitude of different u-joints: Weld on, bolt on, Weld and bolt on, D-shape, double d-shaped, splined, etc. Then you can pick steel, stainless or aluminum too!
