I searched the forums and didnt find too many pics. I know alot of people don't like the under-bed spare tire carriers, but i like the idea and want to get one. What i need though is some good pictures of how the carrier attaches to the frame and how the tire sits when in the carrier. The only reason i need pictures is to see if my exhaust will be in the way. Any help with this would be awesome

I believe there may be two different versions... don't quote me though. I don't have pictures, but there is a large "plate" with a lip to catch the under side of the wheel so it doesn't slid around. At the front end of the carrier is a long bolt that bolts to the frame and to the carrier. The other end is also a long piece of threaded rod that has a piece that you thread on and off the rod to secure/lower the tire carrier. I believe the solid side of the tire carrier is on the driver's side frame rail, while the side you raise/lower is on the passenger side. You should see a hole on each rail at an angle from each other (may be a bunch of other empty holes down there as well).

I have the standard spare tire carrier on my 83 C20. I had to move the threaded bolt forward a couple of inches in order for the spare tire to clear my receiver style under frame trailer hitch. I think this is why most carriers are not present - they interfere with a trailer hitch.
The pictures are not very good, but you can see the modified location of the carrier bolt brings the tire very close to the exhaust, but the exhaust is not touching the tire (tire on one side of the bolt, exhaust on the other side of the bolt, with about 3/8" of air space on either side.
I also had to have the rear bumper notched out to clear the box when it is in the full dump position, which is why it looks odd (pictures are with the box in the full up position.)
As I recall, when I got all of the bits and pieces from LMC the total bill was about $100 and I had the top cross piece still in place - looks like prices have changed. All of the parts I got were "imported."

Thanks for the pics tucsonjwt, judging by your truck i dont believe i will have any issues with the exhaust. What size of tire do you currently have in the carrier?

just a thought, some people use the later model cable style that you can crank up and down

The spare is 235/85R16.

yeah so max i would probably be able to fit a 31x10.50R15 in there, which kinda sucks cuz i will be running 35's in the near future

I had a 31x10.50R15 under the bed on my 77... Thats the max size I can see fitting under there with all stock parts. And the tire was wide enough, you won't be getting the tire hung back up there on your own.... need 2 people and a floor-jack to place it under there.

Thats exactly what I would do if I were starting with nothing. The later model are easy crank down vs the old style that require a hack saw, pry bar, curse words, and WD-40 to work.

i've been thinking about this myself for a while, but probably won't be able to get to it for a while. But in the meantime:

i can't fit a "regular" (235/75 15) tire underneath there either due to trailer hitch and dual exhaust intereference issues.

However, i feel that since a spare is just temporary-----you only need it for as long as it takes to repair or replace the flat, then a smaller tire could be and should be used. Even a temporary "donut" type.

i think some astro vans, which have the same 5X5 bolt pattern, had a temporary type spare.

Then with 2 metal "straps"/crossmembers bolted to either the frame or trailer hitch, this would form a cradle for the tire to rest in. Then maybe use a chain to secure it in there.

The temp spare would(hopefully) be light enough so that getting it in and out would be no problem.

If you look at my pics, you can move the threaded bolt forward about two inches to clear a trailer hitch and still miss the exhaust. If you have mod exhaust or monster trailer hitch, or fat tires, it might not work. My exhaust goes out the side after the rear axle.

I suppose it would be ok if you didn't have any load as well, that is something to definately take into account.
