Kustom 66

so I am finally getting ready to start my build (pix soon, I promise!!) I picked up a low milage 66 c10 LWB. it runs but need minor work. My plan is for a 60s style kustom. I have a set of quad headlights from a 62 Olds, planning on tunneled quad caddy bullet taillights, wide whites, frenched and shaved everything. roll pans and rounded nerf bars, shaved drip rail, filled stake pockets, and lots more. I will be leaving the 250 six popper in it, but may swap to a 700r4 trans to replace the 3 on the tree. not sure yet. I finally got the garage cleaned out, will be putting it in tonight and getting it leveled up on jackstands to start my build. please feel free to pitch in ideas, opinions, or even money! will try to get pix up tonight and please bear with me, this will probably be a LOOONG drawn out build, but I will do my best to keep progress steady. thanks for putting up with my rambling, hope to hear from you all soon with better ideas than I have come up with!

sounds cool what is your idea for the grille?

not quite sure yet, could fab my own tube grille, but leaning towards chrome mesh and drawer pull knobs, either way would be period correct i think.

sounds like a cool build please keep us posted. imo caddy tail lights are way over done.

I have them on my truck Off of a '56 caddy, I thought about running quad, but decided to run single on each side.

as far as caddy lights being overdone, im open to suggestions! im still in the planning stages here...

I wouldn't keep from doing something just because it is overdone, I mean it's hot rodding and it's hard to come up with stuff that hasn't been done yet. Tons of people are running airbags and static drops, I'm not going to let that stop me from eventually laying frame.

Anyways, ask and you shall receive... It's kinda bent up underneath my tail lights from scraping I'm gonna fix it soon...

Welcome again. I’ve always loved Caddy tail lights (obviously), no matter how they’re mounted. Here’s a shot of mine:



You might find the Hirohata style side trim shown in the following thread:

And of course lake pipes and spotlights would be appropriate if you like those accessories.

That looks like 50's buick side trim. Very Very nice. I like the way the Cadillac lights look also. I have mine already. Great Idea.

I would skip the hirohata/buick style trim on our style truck, the gradual curve fights against the horizontal lines of a 60-66..IMO

im thinking either canted quad caddy lights or building a concave roll pan and sinking the taillights behind the nerfbars im building. my computer shot crap on me, so im trying to figure a way to post pics still.

ok, stealing this pic off the truck art post...this is what I am after...kinda sorta... only I will have a fadeaway purple paint. I even like the corvette grille, but I am leaning towards the chrome mesh and bullets or pullknobs. Im gonna draw it and I will post the pic soon

It's looks a little off to me, but some people like there vehicles sectioned and chopped. I don't think I've ever seen a car that was sectioned that I liked. I'll be right back with a picture if I can find it.

I like the mesh/bullet or knob grille concept. I grew up reading the little books and this was certainly popular long ago. I'm surprised more people haven't built custom grilles for these trucks, but I suppose it's because by the time this series of truck came along customizing was falling out of favor for a long time.

Once the stock grille is removed, the smoothly lined cavity is almost as inviting for customizing as an early Merc or 53-56 F100, both of which have been the subject of numerous custom grille designs.

I thought about customizing the grille in mine for a long time, and focused on using a 55 Plymouth grille, with single headlights in round housings attached to the ends. After several years of searching I never found a worthy donor, so I settled for mounting the center bar from a 1950 Plymouth grille guard under the stock GMC grille. I ran it that way for several years before getting bored with the idea and went back to the stock white arrangement, but I still think there is a lot of potential to do something unique and interesting.

I can't find the picture now but there's a truck like this one with the corvette teeth. I forget who owns it but it doesn't look to bad. I wish I could find the picture for you.

now i really like the corvette style grille. im not going to chop or section the truck...yet. i am going with a heavy early 60s flavor with it though. i am working on some rederings of what i want which i will post as soon as they are finished. .
