Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
This is a friends truck thats been sitting in his barn for the last 15 years. Were both young-ins, his grandfather used to own a chevy dealership and take all the trade-ins to the farm to beat on and this was the last one up before the dealership closed (1981). Were planning on building this as a work/towing truck (with the occasional off-road adventure). bedliner is being put everywhere (frame, floors, underbelly etc.), were not even planning on painting the body, except maybe the bottom foot-foot1/2 with bedliner to keep the rust away. My friend doesnt have a lot of money to do this either and we both go to school so we'll work most saturdays. The truck has a 292 I6 with a 4 speed, or three speed w/granny gear, havent identifed the transfer case, a 12 bolt rear and a dana 44 front drum brakes all around. Were disassembling the truck now, but the build plan includes a 4 inch lift, new body mounts and possibly body lift lots of new sheet metal a 14 bolt and dana 60 (for the disc brakes, 14 bolt will be converted) and power brakes/steering. Were not looking to buy too many new parts and were not buying replacment panels just cheap sheet metal from a distrubutor near by. I just put up random pics, more will come eventually.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Yea, ill try and get some more pics up, my friends and I can only really get together once a week so things will go kind of slow, I forgot to mention that the snowplow set-up took a good hour of grinding to get off, none of the bolts would turn AND it was welded on.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Ok, i have some more pics, theyre really just of some more rust as my friends have ditched me pretty much all week so ive really just been doing some grinding and taking some smaller bits and pieces off but I do have a question that I need some answers on.
I could buy an 87 rolling chassis with a 6 inch lift, a 14 bolt and dana 60, 350 engine (that knocks) and a clean good radiator ( he radiator I have is done). Now could I just put the drivetrain I have (292 engine, trans, transfercase) onto the 87, throw on the cab and start driving or should I sandblast and paint the frame and swap the axles? o i forgot to ask or is it even a good deal at all, I would get all that I mentioned ( I forgot to mention the frame is in good shape, its painted) for $2000? PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR OPINIONS

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
K well im tryin to find a good parts truck, the last one wasent for us. the new candidate is a running truck with a good 350 engine 205 t case hydro bell 465. hydorboost brake setup. Anyway here are some more pics of some rust & the engine.
Attached is an image of the front passenger side wheel-well, there is a solenoid or something but it connects to the battery and a thick wire that used to go to a dump bed this truck used to have, can I take this out?

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Update: Haven't gotten too much done, drained coolant took out cooling system(radiator, heater core, hoses) and front passenger side wheel well and fender. Buying a low mileage set of military axles (dana 60, 14 bolt) this sunday.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Yea, i'm getting them for $900, after searching craigslist for a couple weeks I feel like thats not a bad price. I feel bad that I havent gotten more work done, but 95% of the bolts are almost too rusty to turn.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Looks like a fun project. Do yourself a favor, pace yourself as most of these restorations take 1+ years to complete. Burning yourself out early in the build will drag it out longer than it should be.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Were trying to not make it last too long, were not even getting a new drive train (except axles). were just gonna tear it down sandblast it paint the frame & axles do the suspension and clean the engine. At least that's what I'm hoping to have done, then all the body/reassembly/electrical stuff can be done and hopefully we'll be towing my boat to the lake by the summer.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Got the 14 bolt and dana 60 today, but how do most of you guys move these things, we used a shop crane but I was wondering if there was a faster/easier way to do it.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
UPDATE: Well i've seen snails move at a faster pace than this project, but I have done some work, the wiring is almost all out (getting a new harness), steering column is out, I got those axles. We are now in the process of taking the engine out, which would have been done earlier if my friend had not bent his engine hoist, but we got a new one and he is bringing it over tonight.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
I should get some pics up but I got a new camera that I am still figuring out, anyway the cab is ready to come off and I was wondering how it is done? where should things be hooked up? I have access to an engine hoist, 3 floor jacks plenty of jack stands (but they're pretty short) and probably about 3 friends and me (so four people). So with all that how would you guys do this thing?
* I also have 10 cinder blocks

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Here are some pics of where were at so far (the body is ready to come off, we've actually lifted it up, but we have had no place to put it so we put it back down)

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
moved to 4x4 section per your request... nice project. I'd make a small wooden frame (dolly) to set the cab on, then you can move it around your garage as needed...
Plan on coming down to carlisle in the spring summer and fall for parts... great deals, no tax or shipping charges... a few of our board vendors show up and we usually have a good time.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Also, remember when the time comes to lift the cab off, the shifters can come off too! The t-case shifter simply unbolts/un pins but the trans shifter has a collar that you can push down and rotate and it'll come up from the pins.
Good Luck

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
Only other way to move axles easy i think would be to leave the tires on and roll them where you need them.

Today I took the steering gear box off.
my friend and I know how were taking the cab off i'm just waiting on him to come home (he's traveling right now) and bring his floor jack over, so hopefully cab will be off by the end of this coming week.

Re: Rusty 3/4 ton chevy, should be fun
The engine is currently out and the axles are about to come off, we expected to be further than this at this time but we never actually get our and actually work on the truck. Anyway I can't find my camera, but I found some pics from before we tore it apart

The horn on top of the cab is classic.
