Desisions....need input from you guys with exp

k guys, i need advice here, i just got a job offer for a welding position here in town, ive been looking for 2 months now and still slugging away at a local grocery store, so today i get a call to come work for 6 weeks, the outfit for a contract from a mill to make some huge drums, and they want me to weld them up, so that is great news but im a bit aprehensive because when the 6 weeks is up it could turn into a steady job but it also could not, so id be out of work if it doesnt, and right now at the grocery store its steady and i could work there for the next 50 years if i wanted, allthough i wouldnt, butwhat im gettingat is should i sorta gamble here and take the welding job that pays 6 bucks more an hour then the grocery store or wait forsomething that sounds more steady? im really leaning towards the welding job just so i can get experience etc but i thought id see what you guys think

Talk to your grocery store boss, if you are an outstanding member of the work force, he'll probably hire you back if the welding gig falls thorugh.
Also, is the money you are making at the grocery store very much? Could you replace it (pay wise) very easily?

i would take the job and just save what you can while your working thataway if you end up out of work at the end of the 6 weeks you will have some extra cash untill you can find a job plus if you do become a full time employee that just means you will have a good pile of money to dump into your truck or whatever else

Derek, only you can answer your question.There are some things to consider though.
Making more money doesn't always make you sucessful,so you need to take into account what type of work you most prefer.You also might discuss working fewer shifts at the store with the manager.You might be able to work both jobs for a while(6 weeks is a long time to work 2 full time jobs).That would let you get the experience and earn the $$$ while keeping your regular job in case the welding doesn't go full time.
At any other time I would probably suggest you go weld and get the experience in the field you want to be in.However there are not many jobs available right now and there are lots of people looking for work.
The job market right now is pretty tight so reguardless of what you do don't burn any bridges.


I guess I probably haven't been much help but I hope it does work out for you.

If your not really in much debt and can take a risk it sounds like a good oportunity. If you can weld and would like to weld or work in that type of field which in my opinion is different that the grocery business then give it a try. A good welder with good experience if fairly employable here on west coast. It is hard work but at the end of the day you usually have something to show for it. I like the idea above in talking with grocery boss to see if you might get a second chance if welding shuts down. I have left several jobs for greener pastures and was always told that the door was open to come back. I always discussed it with them ahead of time and gave at least 2 weeks notice that I was leaving. I was always encouraged to follow my goals and get ahead. One never does that unless they get out there and try.

thanks for the ideas guys, im going to see if i can get a leave of absense and if he doesnt like that then ill suggest just working a shift or 2 a week there, and if he doesnt like that either then ill have to quit i suppose...

Your allmost 20 so I'd pursue what you want to do for the future but don't burn any bridges to get there. Give your current boss at least two weeks notice and work hard those last two weeks.

Take the welding job(if thats what you enjoy) Be prepared to work long hours(hot dirty dangerous)hours. I would definetly tell your boss your intentions. If you put in a true 8 hours a day at the welding gig and have a good attitude(and you can weld..lol) you should have a good future.

The putting 2 weeks notice in is a must. (I shoulda mentioned that in my other responce)
I have also always been able to go back to every single job I have had.
And swinging 2 full time jobs is hard, but I have done that more than I have worked one job. It's tough, and hard on your body...but it can be done and will cover you both ways. You'
ll get to try something new, a good paying job with good future possabilities, and you'll still have the grocery place to fall back on if the welding gig is more than you barganed for.
And while PanelDeland's statement is true,

The other side of hat coin can be pretty crappy too.
Nothing worse than being overworked, bustin your ass, being the most faithfull guy in the shop, most dependable, and only getting 11 bucks an hr. (11 bucks an hr may sound good at 20...but it is downright depressing at 29)

thanks for the input guys, im starting tomorrow morning at 8 am, im pretty excited, i went over to the shop and talked to the boss, he showed me what ill be doin and it looks cool so thats nice...and the other guys inthe shop seemed nice so im gettin pretty anxious, cant wait to get my hands dirty
