Re: 700r4 tranny

So if I'm understanding correctly, when you had this trans rebuilt recently (prior to today) you installed a new torque converter, and now the trans guy says it is full of crap? Did you not flush the cooler out the first time? I hope you got the cooler cleaned out with running trans fluid thru it. Myself, I would have just bought a can or two of the trans cooler flush....cheap insurance.

Re: 700r4 tranny

trans wasn't really rebuild more like clutches replaced. And I just flushed the line the first time and the second time it had to be fixed with the same torq so I'm asuming the torq wasn't cleaned very well the second time. By the mechanic.

Well that's good to hear G, I'm glad you got it back on the road. As for me, I'm still fighting this fuel problem. I just picked up an electronic fuel pump today and will attempt to install it tomorrow. Hopefully it fixes my problem.

Re: 700r4 tranny

Man don't mess around! Want to come over to NM and help me drop the trans in my lady's '65?

As for the early shifting, sounds like you need to fine tune that TV cable. Are you using any kind of corrector on the carb? Like Bowtie Overdrives, or other?

Re: 700r4 tranny

To get it to shift later, push the cable in. Pull the cable out if you want it to shift early. It should be shifting into second at 20mph and 3rd at 30mph and so on.

Did you get the switch that hooks up to the brake for the lock up?

Re: 700r4 tranny

Sounds to me like you need to get a real TV cable correction bracket and get that TV cable adjusted properly using a pressure gauge. Otherwise you're just going to keep having troubles. The same for the TC lock up. That needs to be setup right. IMO your tranny guy hasn't been helping you much either. There are several threads over in Engine and Drivetrain about setting up a 700R4.

Re: 700r4 tranny

If it's long tail 350, it is the same length as a 700r4. Short tail, no.

We put a 700r4 in our '65, and I've been contemplating on going back too. Something's fishy with the trans and I can't seem to get the TV cable right either.

i called him complainning about the 4th gear not getting in and the torq not locking.. i could almost see him rolling his eyes over the phone.lol. he was going to work on it but on the way back from work i kept ajusting it i burned it again. so with that being said back to the trusty th400. its nice tranny just wish it had a kick down to it.

That's exactly the issue with ours. It's not burned, but it won't get 4th anymore. Lisa's brother, who is a professional trans rebuilder, did a couple of 'experimental' things on this tranny. He messed with the governor and the valve body to try to get to shift more like a 350 or a 400. It seemed to work good in the beginning, but something went wrong. He has another one to build for us, but sometimes I want to just got back to a th350.

The 400's are bullet proof trannys too. They have an electronic kickdown. My 73 came stock with one and it's great...

Re: 700r4 tranny

I have had no problems with amy of my 700's. I used stock GM brackets for the TV cable and a Q'Jet carb. I have the tranny that was in my 4x4 and it is built. I even did a reprograming kit in the valve body and all the other goodies also. The 1-2 shift was harsh if you kept your foot in it and you could even feel the 3-4 shift and when I locked it up manually with my switch it was heaven. I like the power of locking and unlocking it when I feel like it. It pulls the truck great in the higher elevations with it is 3rd and locked up. I am going to switch out the output shaft so I can use it in my 2 wd and I am also going to upgrade to 5 pinoin planet sets seeing it will be behind a BBC.
