Any first start suggestions?
I am about ready to start my 5.3L for the first time and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, since the motor has been sitting for a while. I already filled the coolant through the upper hose and I poured a teaspoon of Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder and turned the crank by hand (very smooth feeling). Do I need to bleed the air from the fuel rail, or will it works its way out? Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: Any first start suggestions?
Pressure the rail by turning the key on and off a couple of times, and make sure you have everything out of the way. and hit the key. good luck, let us know how it goes

Re: Any first start suggestions?
67,
My 6.0 sat for 2+ years and would not start until I bled the air out of the fuel rail with the schrader valve on the rail. It could be that the injectors were stuck and it was just a coincidence that it started when I bled the rail? I can't find anything about bleeding air out of the rail in the service manual. There are a lot of threads about stuck injectors after the engine sits for some years. Good luck, TR

Re: Any first start suggestions?
since you can't use a drill to spin the oil pump like with a sbc...they say to pull power to the coils and then turn the engine over with the starter until the oil pressure comes up and/or you see oil flowing on the rockers. Then reconnect power and start it up.

Re: Any first start suggestions?
Thanks for the info. I started it up last night and it ran great. Very loud with open headers, though. It did seem to have a few stuck injectors. For the first few seconds it sounded like it was missing a few cylinders and then it came alive. I was so excited to finally hear it run. Maybe I'll post a video on my build thread some time soon.
