What stuff can I get rid of? plus keep or chunk AC.

Hi,
I have decided to keep my 307 in my 77, (was going to install a 350 but I don't really need to). I was wondering since I'm in Texas I can get rid of my smog...well on my smog stuff what can I get rid of? (I will post a pic tomorrow on what my engine looks like) And also I know in Texas it gets pretty hot but I'm thinking about just using the vent windows for what they were made for and chuncking the AC....should I? (it's screwed up so I think I would have to replace just about all of the AC components)

Do NOT get rid of your AC. South Texas Summers are brutal. I'm going to go through mine once I get to that bridge.

I have a low line '78 without factory AC. Even in Los Angeles, it's hot for enough days out of the year to make me want to have AC in all my cars. I would read up on it, and attempt to fix it myself...maybe you can take a course at a community college and fix it with their equipment?

On all my squarebodies I always got better mileage on the freeway with the windows UP and the AC on max than riding with the windows down.

I concur with keep A/C. My experience is that you lose about 1-2 mpg city driving with A/C installed. Since we drive gas hogs anyway, I'll keep the A/C. I drove a 73 with no A/C in AZ for 21 years - one of the dumber decisions I have made. There a lots of squares with A/C installed, so you might be able to find a junk truck and pull out the A/C components and sell the remainder to recoup your cost. Or aftermarket A/C with electronic control, if you can find it.

Keep the A/C. Wait for a local shop/dealer to offer a free a/c inspection with an oil change or something like that and do it. It might cost you some a/c dye and maybe a little freon but it's worth it to see where the system is leaking or just not working. Plus it's always cool to see people look at you in your truck with the windows up in the middle of summer as if to say..."that thing can't possibly have air conditioning?!"

Re: What stuff can I get rid of? plus keep or chunk AC.

if you don't have to pass emissions ditch it all period.

If you can handle the heat remove it. We always take it out and we have triple digits days and high humidity in the summer, I know it aint no TX heat so use your own judgement. We only use it in the wife's car when it's hot for about 5 minutes then it's off and windows down even on the highway. We don't do much highway it's mostly around town. It also helps alot if it rains and you gotta roll em up, but it's still hot out.
