LS swap gas tank info
Hey guys, I'm trying to get as much info on fuel tanks as possible before making my choice for which one to go with.
Any and everyone who has done this swap could you list what you did for your fuel systems (i.e. tanks, lines, pumps) this info would be very helpfull to me and i am sure other looking to do this kind of swap. It's the only thing left for me to do.... Thanks Mike |

1st off, what is the ls going in?
I used a fuel cell I already had and ran the fuel lines to it, return is 5/16" and feed is 3/8" with the external pump close ( about 2ft) to the tank. actually I used -6 braided fuel line from summit along with connectors and all, but you can do the hard lines just as well. You can use your existing fuel tank but need to know what the vehicle is. A tank from FuelCellGuy or Boyds Welding here on the forumn can hook you up with a fuel tank for between the frame rails behind the rear axle too. then you can run the lines like above. Hope this helps.

It's going in a 1972 c10 long bed.
I have read quite a few builds on here, but there isn't a post that is spacific to fuel tank/cells etc. From what i read to use your stock tank you need 2 fuel pumps a low volum to pull from the tank to feed the High pressure one. Any suggestions would be great. Mike |

I am glad you are asking cuz you received incorect information, to feed an LS you just need a pump that will supply 58PSI of fuel, a fuel filter and a regulator unless you are using an intake that has the return already. oh and fuel lines.

I do have a question for you, it looks like there is a stock return line on my tank, in the picture on the link it shows it on the new tank picture in the top left corner. Can't i just hook up a return line to that??? Mike Quote:

Are you talking about this pic in the left of the sending unit? Black plastic thing?
It says in the article they drilled a hole in the upper part of the tank and put a steel 1/4-inch NPT (pipe thread) union and welded it in. I would follow their example however they are using a new tank, not one that had/has fuel in it. Take a pic of what you have so I can see, I didnt think these truck had return lines, but I have been known to be wrong.

No i am talking about something that is there from the factory... Far left corner of the tank, it has something to with smog, not sure what/
Plus, the article you gave me is a little incorrect as well. You can not run the factory syphon style fuel pick up, it will burn out the fuel pump. It needs to be switched to a gravity feed style. You would have to put 2 bungs in the tank, the second one being at the botton of the tank converting it to a gravity feeder. Thanks for your feed back, I am hoping others will join in to make this a link for future builds for others to reference as well as myself finding what i am going to do. Mike |

I used an LS1 F-body fuel tank turn around backwards (so the fill is on the passenger side). It has the stock oem fuel pump in it and it runs into a corvette filter/regulator.
So from the filter regulator up to my fuel rails is a combo of aluminum hard line and SS hose. There are a couple of QD fittings too. |

i looked all over the internet and finally just went down to auto zone a put it together. i could have the parts in hand and saved me time with the mouse. 88 fuel tank sending unit from a 88 and a 90 psi pump. rock auto was the only place to find the gas tank 25 gal.

I talked to the shop that will be doing the work for me and he said I could come off cheaper going with a fuel cell setup. I'm still thinking about it. I guess the savings would come from not having to drop and install a new tank.

It's a few more bucks, but we build aluminum fuel tanks, with ls1 pumps installed. we use a flow-tech 255 ltr/hr pump, good to 600 hp - asp. check them out at nolimit.net

I used stock tank with external E2000 pump mounted on the frame rail with a vette Filter/Regulator. My tank had several ports on it (due to being an emissions tank) and just put the return line onto the one that is at the filler neck. if its running and you remove the cap you can see it dumping back into the tank.
If you happen to have the older fuel rails that have the regulator on the rails you just have to connect a feed and return line to the rails, otherwise you need the regulator (ie vette style).

Stock 71 tank is not baffled, my pump is connected to stock feed line, as long as it stays primed there is not an issue.

I have a non baffled tank also, I just dont let it get under 1/4 tank, havent had any issues with fuel starvation on stops/turns.

I ended up going with a brothers blazer tank. And i am modding it to be gravity feed with a walbro fuel pump. My engine is the earlier model with reg and return line. All i am doing in welding in a bung on the lower rear of the tank feeding the pump and putting a return line on the front top. I am hoping this will work for this application without worrying about burning up a fuel pump or two. From everything i have read and everyone i have spoken to, making it a gravity feed tank to the external pump it should work fine. When i actually start my swap i will hopefully take photos and post my build. So maybe someone else will be able to use it for there build like i have with others on this board.
