Fair asking price for this truck

Hey all, new to the board here
Anyways, just trying to get a feel for the price on this truck... I know different areas will fetch different $$ but does this seem fair?

Just in from Central California, a rustfree 1980 Chevy 1/2 Ton Stepside 2WD Pickup. $5,000
Truck features include:
- 350 V8
- Automatic
- Cruise Control
- Dual Tanks
- Lowered

The asking price is $5,000 and this is a truck I am looking at purchasing. $5,000 seemed a little high too me

It would be high for DFW, and maybe Cali, but from what I have seen, the rust belt has a higher threshold for rust free vehicles, if you want it and want something you might not have to do major rust repairs on it, then it is priced right.

If you think about it, replacing lower fenders or fenders, cab corners, inner and outer rockers, bed sides/fenders with paint and all, plus the cost of the truck. $5K seams reasonable to me.

here's a couple of trucks in my area and the price that you can look at to get some idea. i think the truck that youre looking at is a little high, but it does matter where the truck is from, etc.

Thats kinda exactly what I was going for, a great body that doesn't need alot of work. Most of the ones up here are about $1,000-$2,000... but they have some serious cancer in the bed or dog house

sounds like this truck might be the one for you, If it were me, and I wanted that truck, I would take the $5K with me, go look at it, search the thing just like the TSA and then offer, like $4200 cash. I would really harp on the things I dont like, for instance if I found any rust at all, the price would go down, engine issues, wiring issues etc, price goes down and tell him about that stuff too. see what the guy says. Be prepared to walk away if he reacts negatively, like screams at you, then you both can haggle a little, maybe depends on what you find. Good luck!

Like I said, use the 3800 as your guide. look it over real good, harp on the issues you see and then see if you think what your deductions are and the 3800 are close. remember if you had to do all that body work and paint, you would be in deeper than $5K also.

Ok, $4k+ is kinda the price range I was thinking... I think any lower than that would just make him mad and I know I hate being low-ball'd myself. Thanks for the advice

Heck, have someone call and offer him $3800, then you call a couple of hours later with the $4000. He'll probably take it. tell him you have cash, and the other's guy's having to wait on the other money until tax time. see what he does.lol

Remember on the asking price they have to start somewhere. It is probably higher than what they actualy want. It's easier to reduce the price in a sale than it is to raise it.

I'd give him 2- maybe 2500 for it. Those things are a dime a dozen round here and many of them solid. Patch panels aren't that much.

Yeah patch panels aren't too much but installing them correctly is another area of consideration (time/money).

However that particular vehicle does not look to be worth 5k, up here in the north a clean square body has been going for around 4k and that's considering if it has had most of the worn out or risky parts replaced already, and a so so finish.

Ask him about the lines, brakes, master C, water pump, all the stuff you're not going to want to see fail right after you buy it.

All I can say is...if I was asking $5K for a truck or whatever and I knew it was worth it because of the points I made earlier, then if someone came to me with a left field low ball offer, I would either hang up the phone, ask them to leave or walk away from them and not sell to them if they were the only offer. I know a little pig headed but its the way I would be in those circumstances.

I think if you want the truck, then go for it, make a reasonable offer for your wallet and see what happens. I wouldn't go less than the $3800 and no more than his asking price. You couldn't get that truck repaired for that if the rust was there.

Lots of times people feel their junk is worth more than it really is. We've all been there.

Still no way I'd give more than 2500 for that particular vehicle.

Living here in California, I would say that is very high! Looking at the interior pics leaves a lot to the imagination. What condition is the dash and headliner in?? How's the seat under what appears to be a fairly worn seat cover? Also, has the motor / tranny been replaced or rebuilt recently (probably not or it would of likely been mentioned).

I would expect that truck to be priced in the high 3's with an OBO--if the interior is in decent shape and there is an older rebuild on the motor and or tranny. All original drivetrain with a torn seat under the cover and I would expect high 2's to maybe low 3's with an OBO.

I'm not saying it is 100% worth $5K, I am suggesting he go look at it and determine that himself, it is only worth what someone will pay. I agree with you that most think their junk is worth more than it really is.

If I knew my truck was worth the asking price, whether that be $2K or $5k and someone was to come and low ball me with a less than fair offer, I would not be happy. You know many others want to buy something for nothing way too often also, or they come into a deal that they just didn't realize the cost prior to getting in.

So your saying that if you had a $5K price on a truck and someone came in with a $2K offer, you would take it? I don't think anyone would.

I do agree with Greg71 that you really need to look it over good before any offers are made. If it is completely rust free ( which I doubt) then $4-5K isn't overly ridiculous.

My thinking as I have said before is, if you were to buy a truck in the $1500-2K range with some rust, then start the body work, especially if you're having someone do it, rockers, cab corners and front & rear fenders, you would be in the $5K range anyway, don't ya think?

The value of an old truck depends on condition and how much you want that particular vehicle. For $5000 I would expect not just rust free, but all systems repaired to fully operational condition, restored interior, and close to perfect body. If you spend $5000, then spend another $3000 on interior, suspension, tires, brakes, alternator/starter, drivetrain - and the biggy - air conditioning -- then you have an $8,000 truck which may not be worth $5,000.
These old trucks are full of expensive surprises - especially if they have been driven hard by previous owners. After my expensive experiences with 3 old squares, I should have spent all the money toward a new or nearly new work truck and be done with all the repairs. The only reason I have an old square is so that I can use it as a work truck and not worry about getting it beat up. I would not haul/dump dirt, rock, trash to the dump in a restored classic. But each to his or her own.

honestly I see nicer trucks around here go for 2500. My buddy I work with bought a 86 swb and its interior is mint, looks and runs great. He paid 2500 And it was on craigslist for a long time. Could use a paint job as its the original red. AC even works. Steppers usually are a little cheaper. I can see it honestly being worth around 3k-3500.. and 2500 being a decent deal. I wouldnt pay over 2500 because when I buy I want a deal..
