manual trans
were 292 common with a manual trans? how hard would it be to swap an auto for a manual. i imagine its easier said then done! and is it worth it with a straight 6

I would think the stick shift would help get you up to speed faster and allow you more control of course, more towing and all that stuff, but for driver ease auto would work.
Any v8 chevy trans should work since the old inline had the same bellhousing bolt pattern. If it's a short stick shift like a 3 speed on the column or floor or whatever, should be the exact same length as a short tail th350 and bolt up in the stock location perfect and use the stock driveshaft and everything. I say this because we had a 76 that came stock with a 350 motor, not sure on trans I think 3 spd. stick on the column, when we bought it, it had a 292 6 and 3 on the tree, converted to floor shift shortly after, then went to a 250 series or whatever it is 6, and a 350 after that. When the 3 spd. busted we put in a saginaw 4 spd. car trans and it was perfect length, truck rusted over where and got scrapped, put the motor and trans in a monte carlo, then put a th350 short tail behind the 4 spd. worked perfectly, same length.
