Personnally I don't like anything hanging below the bumper. But to make it a hidden hitch would take considerable more effort and fabrication.

Cost was about $125 from Pep Boys. It tucked in pretty tight under my Suburban bumper and still (but just barely) left room for the spare.
I clamped it in place, bolted it together, then removed it from the truck and welded it solid. I also welded on a couple flanges that bolt to the bottom of the frame for extra security. These mods void the warranty, but there's just no way it's going to fail.
I think I nailed cost, looks, and build quality all in the same hitch.

Thanks for the info, that looks like a cost effective way of doing it. I have just decided that I'm looking for a roll pan first. I just like how clean the hidden hitch looks behind the plate. If I went with the bumper, I will need to get the bumper and the brackets since I have this aftermarket step bumper "welded" to the frame...

I was just at a local parts swap meet and just missed a $50 roll pan for my truck by about 20 seconds... It had the plate boxed out just like I needed...

Here a member fchava cut a square thru hole in his bumper, and has a square chrome plug when not using his hitch...

My plan is to get a rollpan and a bumper installed. I would need a solid rollpan and have the license plate recess cut out up high so it is above the bumper. My goal is to hide the receiver and plug in harness behind the license plate. Having access to them via a flip up/down license plate bracket.

I would also have to cut out holes in the rollpan for the bumper brackets to pass through. I have been thinking of a way to grommet this area and figured I will use grommets like the ones on the old beetles for the front bumper brackets pictured below

If you tie it in like top fuel did no reason not to run a rear gas tank, I picked up my hitch from a private seller from a jeep cherokee, I just have to grind the welds separate the wings from the tube, flip the mount wings around and reweld, 20 bucks into it so far.

I like this but how do you cute a chrome bumper without burning the chrome or making it turn blue from the heat???

This is mine that bolts on under the chassis in holes that were there before.

I have always wanted the whole rear end to be so I can dismantle it, rather than weld it all up.



Next up I welded the receiver to the cross bar. Quite pleased with the weld, including the upside down rear weld.



Bumper fitted.



Removable number plate fitting.

This is on a separate sliding mount with a retaining pin, so I can remove the tow hitch when not in use.



Not bad for an amalgam of Jeep Cherokee and Mercedes A Class tow bars.



To me this whole thing probably cost around $25.00 to make, including the free donor parts.
