I am building a 496 bbc for replacement of the small displacement.
Anyone interested in a slightly used 327?
I have almost the same motor 280/480 cam,9.25-1 comp, procomp vortec heads 185cc runners and I might be that hp limit out of my 361 sbc. Or maybe Im just under estimating it!

i have a 327 in my 63 nova,

It does fine and i love them in light cars. good decent engine just dont expect a pure rocket, as others hav said nothing beats the cubes and extra TQ,

but, if i had any more power it would be crashed even harder or sooner.

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?

I know there's no replacement for displacement, but sometimes I think the small cubes can have an advantage. At the place I race at, it's just an old unprepped airstrip that seems more slippery than the street. Me and a few other guys with small motors are able to get off the line without too much drama while the guys with big power/torque are left spinning or unable to hook up down the track.

my track here is real slippery too. getting out of the hole is pain if your a torque monster. will see how the 327 does if i don't like it i'll go back to the 383 i'm just trying to get into the 12's

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?

While Im not running any smaller engines right now i have. I had two 283 motors ,1-327 and a very fun 302. The 283s run great and are damn near indestructable. The 327 put quite a few 350s to shame. The 302 wasn't much on bottm but heck it didnt have topend limit I dont think. Iw would wind as long as the valve train kept up heck few times it went silent from floating everything I think and I jst grabed another gear and kept winding it.
Now if your out for max torque, cheaper build and milage its hard to beat cubic inches. My last 383 combo made over 450 hp and would get great milage if you kept your foot out of it.Heck with 4ps auto I could cruise at 70mph under 2000 rpm and barley touched the throttle.

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?

I figured I would chime in. Last sumer my buddy and I did a 327 build for his 65 Elk. He was going for the Super Stock look.

It was a simple build. Flat tops, Solid FT Comp cam (224/230@50 .477/.488), 461 Fuelies with upgraded springs, Old Ass Eddy intake and Holley 600. I'll tell you what, when he runs through the gears and attemps to shift (auto tranny) at 6,500 it ends up being shifted at 7,000.
