New fuel pump, still no start..?

Okay, usually on cold mornings my truck Just fires up first turn of the key, no pumping on the gas, nothing. This morning, My truck did not start.. I pumped on the gas, and it tried once, but nothing. It turns over, but never tries to run.

People here told me that this was my fuel pump.. So I changed it! And in the process of changing it, i cut the metal line that runs from the pump to the rubber hose that connects to the carb. I replaced all of that with just hose; And a fitting that connects to my fuel pump.

Needless to say, My truck STILL WONT start..


I need help.

Yeah I have dual tanks.. And what is the selector Valve? the switch inside; or the switch under my truck by my passenger side tank?

Did you check you if you have spark at the plugs. If not check your ignition module or coil, and also make sure your fuel pump is pumping fuel. Start with basics.

I put the 8th plug on my wiper, and saw a spark when I turned it over. and now on the pump, It's new! I lifted the rod, put the pump in, bolted it, and connected the hoses( along with the hose I made) my custom hose should work right ? its the size of the metal one I cut off !

Should I change all of my plugs now or now?

I have had new fuel pumps fail on me and it's better to be sure you have fuel so you can eliminate the fuel pump and look elsewhere. Just put a container on the fuel line to the carb and have someone crank it. If you see fuel you are good to go. Then you can start looking elsewhere. Alot of people on here will help you out with other things to check.

Dump a small amount down the carb, if it is firing, it should at least try to start. That will tell you if the spark is there.

I have also done this, before I took the old pump off, It would try! and it hasn't tried today.

So if you pour gas in the carb it doesn't start? And you have a good spark, and your plugs make sure they are not fouled out. If no fuel from the pump take it to the parts store and get a new one I am sure they will warranty the exchange.

only thing is, my box kind of flew put of my truck. So I will just buy a new one! and no, no fuel from pump. Thanks for your help! I will check ALL my plugs tomorrow.

I recently had a similar problem. My truck was cranking fine then one day nothing, I went through 2 pumps and a new set of spark plugs. To rule out the selector switch under the truck, I went around it with a 3/8 rubber line from the tank with fuel over to the fuel pump feed line and BINGO!! I had fuel and the truck cranked. Maybe you've checked that already, figured it couldn't hurt to post anyway.

My truck is an 80 , I don't know if there is a difference in design. But I followed the hard line coming from my driverside tank in the selector switch and disconnected it at the switch. The I found the line going from the selector switch to the pump and disconnected it at the switch. I connected those 2 ends with 3/8 fuel line. It sounds complicated, you basically bypass the selector switch with rubber line

You'll only need maybe 12 inches of hose. From hardline to hardline. I guess Its more of a selector valve, not switch

I know this sounds stupid but it happened to my friend on his pontiac 400. The mechanical fuel pump died so he bought a replacement. The pump looked IDENTICAL but after much determination through these same problems, the inlets and outlets were swapped. So his hard line from the carb was hooked up to pump inlet and the outlet was plumbed to the tank. He was essentially pumping fuel out of the bowl back to the tank. We were sitting there cussing at the pump until i had it in my hands and pumped it and noticed the suction on the wrong fitting. Once we swapped lines it fired right up.
