Mounting 4L80E question

Hi,

I'm installing a 4L80E tranny behind my LQ9 6.0L in a '87 SWB 2WD and I'm searching for just the basic steps of how to bolt up the tranny to the motor.

Are there any threads outlining this with pics that anyone knows about? Any sites that might list out the parts I need to do this as well (seals and gaskets?)

You will need the crank spacer, 4l80e flexplate, flexplate bolts and bell housing bolts. Make sure the torque converter is seated before you try bolting the trans up. Should not need any gaskets or seals unless you want to replace your torque converter seal. Hope this helps.

did the trans come WITH the lq9? if so, I dont think you have to do anything

No the transmission is from a different truck. The Lq9 is from a 2004 Chev silverado SS, the 4L80E is from a 2wd 2003 Chev 3500 flat deck.

I'm just having a mental block with what to do first, second etc etc when putting these two things together because the tranny is not a rebuild ---- so it's a bit unclear about 'seating the tc', doing the fluid etc etc.

Is there a site with the steps laid out??

To my knowledge the 80e never came behind the lq9, always a 4l65e.
First install the spacer, flexplate and bolt them in place.
Second seat the converter, easiest way is to set the tranny on its tail so you have gravity working for you. turn the tc 3 turns in both directions two times. while turning the tc should drop into place3 times i think. the tc bolt pad should then be 1" (1.030'')inside the bell housing, if not repeat turning until it is.
third bolt them together
fourth slide tc forward and bolt to flexplate

Thanks usmmchevy, I'm going to try what you suggested when I get my block back from the shop.

For anybody searching this thread topic: I bought GM part number 12621399 (new flex plate and adapter with bolts) and I ordered new bellhousing bolts as well.

I will put a detailed summary of how I mounted the tranny in my '87 build thread for anyone looking for that info. Thanks!
