engine decode 230 or 250?

just found out my engine could be a 230 or 250 so i need some help. its a 65 c10 with a six cylinder,3 on tree. the stamping on engine is 3877178 and behind the distributor is F0303TF.
Also near back of block is CON2 C25

also i have the head off and can see the pistons, they have little D shapes on them. thanks.

Re: engine decode 230 or 250?

If you've got the head off, measure the stroke. 3.25 is the 230 and 3.5 is the 250 if I am correct.

the casting # wont help much, as that # and most others, were used on both engines. Thats the same casting as my '63 230, and was used all the way through 1978.
The Con2 means conveyor 2 at the plant.

The stamping on the distributor pad should tell you final build info, you might check on Inliners.org to see if someone has the decode info

The 230 used a "flat top" piston with valve relief eyelets, the 250 and 292 had the D shaped recessed you describe, so it yours should be a 250.
Your fuel pump is forward of the passenger side engine mount and the engine mounts are symmetrical/equal, and not offset right? If your mounts are staggered it is a 292

Regardless, the 230/250 use common parts and should be considered almost the same.

Re: engine decode 230 or 250?

Its probably a 250 based on the pistons. Since it sounds like a major rebuild is in order, even if it is a 230, you can get a reman'd 250 crank and make it a 250. I think the only difference between 230/250 is crank and pistons.

Lots of info to improve its performance at Inliners.org
The bible on these motors is Leo Santucci's. get a copy if you want to plan any mods or hottrodding.

Re: engine decode 230 or 250?

Rusty, are you talking about a gasket kit or engine kit (bearings, pistons, etc?)
the 230/250 gasket kit should be the same.
If your talking about an engine kit, you need to buy that with your machine shop after they have processed the block. You will probably end up +30 or +60 on your bore size and the crank may need turning and undersized bearings.
