Re: 4 point harness for bench seat

was gonna say ya that should be legal. the only thing you need is a bar running across the back of the cab behind the seat to attach the shoulder straps too and you also need to weld new tabs for the lap belts

Are you asking if they are street legal, or track legal? Big difference.

Re: 4 point harness for bench seat

Thats were it gets tricky, The harness may be legal, but the DOT won't appprove the way it gets mounted, they want the harness mounted to the factory points with the factory hardware, but the 4 point won't work that way. Even if you put a rollcage in to mount it off of, they won't approve because they don't understand that the rollcage is stronger then the factory mounting points. Well, I say they don't understand, but its more likely they can't prove that the roll cage installed was done properly so they won't approve it. Thats the problem when you get people that don't care to see past factory, like the DOT. If you had people in there that understand vehicles and what we do to them them, life would be so much better, because they would know that what the majorty of us do to your vehicles, only improves the safety and reliability to our vehicles.

Re: 4 point harness for bench seat

GMC Guy, are these for the 74 in your sig? If so them I wouldn't worry, about DOT approved mounting. Just find a DOT approved harness and go. Your truck is a 74 so it likely came with factory lap belts. As long as you use the factory mounts they shouldn't bother you. You will just need to find away to mount the upper belts so the connect to there support at shoulder height.

ya they would be going in my 74, which i have shoulder belts in now. came from the factory with lap belts though. i was thinking about welding a bar across the cab behind the upper part of the seat to mount the upper belts. does anyone have any pics or anything?

Re: 4 point harness for bench seat

Before you do anything I'd speak with the "Tech Department" for whatever brand of belt you're considering. There are ways to safely install racing type belts in a street car/truck. Let the manufacturer give you advice for their particular brand of belts.

As for welding a bar across behind the seat, it isn't that simple. The bar needs to be part of a properly designed roll cage. Welding a thick wall bar to sheet metal is a bad idea.

Looks like a good way to windup with a broken back if you get in a wreck.

Re: 4 point harness for bench seat

My guess is the way the harness is set up in that pics is wrong. He probably mounted the upper belts to the floor behind him, which is typically a bad idea, because if you are ever in an accident the upper belts will pull back and down compressing your spine in a very uncomfortable and harming way. The best way is a cage, but you can get away with just a main hoop, mid bar and two forward bars like this pic

Some peope may say you can get away with just the main hoop and mid bar, but they're wrong. You need something to stop the bar from collapsing forward or backward in the event of a roll over.

Jegs. 200-$300 Not sure about legallity in your state. WHY would you want those belts without a roll bar? They would be a pain in the ass for short trips to the grocery store.I am gonna run plastic racing seats in my street truck. Not sure yet about seat belt type or roll cage.

Re: 4 point harness for bench seat

Jegs does.
Why run those belts on the street? Not sure what I'm going to use yet. I may run a cage, I may keep the factory belts. Not sure yet.

Re: 4 point harness for bench seat

Reviving this thread because I am interested in this as well. Since the gas tank has bolt mounts on the top and bottom, could you use the top gas tank mounts for the upper harness?

Re: 4 point harness for bench seat

I wouldn't fasten a seatbelt to any part of the gas tank structure..
