Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
Ive got the toggle switch for my fuel pump in later on when i get my gauges in i will wire it to a oil pressure switch where in the presence of no oil pressure it will shut off. very useful in a crash.
The connector pin for the ground on the pump broke so i bought a little rotary tool and had to cut part of this plastic housing to get to the metal to mount a connector hopefully it works or i will need to buy a new pump As for the engine bay its going through a makeover *painting valve covers black *re routing the wires for a cleaner looking engine bay and further away from engine heat *moving the battery to drivers side wheres there more room *I took off the rubber cover on the firewall and the insulation--which burned in our suburban so might as well take it out for a safety precaution and it looks better. IMO * going to paint the firewall black * going to paint the rear half of the frame since the bed is off i bought a angle grinder also...best money i have spent so far! |

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
great progress, but question, with the fuel pump wired to an oil pressure switch, wont it take longer to start after its been sittin or after you change the oil? i notice it usually takes a little bit for the psi to build up after an oil change

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
This is a pretty standard setup for lift pumps. Good example is the 6.5 diesels. Just look up 6.5 OPS if you need any info. Since the switches trips just over zero, it will kick the pump on in a crank, two tops assuming you have a healthy engine. You'll also keep the pump running a few seconds after the engine is shut off.

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
Well got my engine bay painted black today and valve covers painted black too it looks great! cleaned it up alot!. and made a drivers side battery holder out of a passenger side one. So goal is tomorrow to re route the wires to the drivers side to the new battery location. before everything was clumped up on the passenger side. Bad new too im running low on cash only got a couple of bucks but the good news is that a couple people want to buy my car 1300 obo cash! thank god for craigslist!
took my positive wire off from the starter and it was burnt and some of the insulation burned from resting on the exhaust manifolds. was gonna replace it anyways. MORE TO COME! |

Any shots of the battery tray in? I've got about 4 stock trays laying around. Gonna be adding a second battery to mine. Can't stand the factory spot for a second battery.

So what is the purpose of moving the battery? or are you running 2?

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
Oh, you mean stock driver side spot? No, that is pretty much the best spot. I was thinking about the bracket that puts the battery on top of the passenger fender well. Those I can't stand. If your curious about the setup, I can find a picture. All the CUCV's have them. Put two heavy deep cycles in there and my truck would end up with a fat chick lean... People would start to think it's really a Dodge, or something. Haha.
Thanks for the pictures! Good work on the tray!

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
the way i had the wires routed before i moved everything it was all clumped with all sorts of hoses very hard to work on with everything in the way.So now theres gonna be only one wire that goes to the passenger side and thats the starter wire. thats what im doing though

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
what do you do when you have scrap metal and a angle grinder with you?
was bored so i made this to hide some wires, probably will be doing the same thing on the drivers side. last picture is of the battery on the drivers side.

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
when i got the truck there were all sorts of things it came with ....lots and lots of hornets, rats, and then one day i was working on the truck open the hood didnt notice it but there was a huge rat on the side......not sure it was rat it haha well anyways i killed, but that bastard bit my wires and decided to make my cab a bathroom and took the insulation around the fuse box inside the cab.
Well i decided to do something about it! ditching the carpet and going with paint black enamel paint for now later on when i have more money im going to rhino line for better protection. Here some pics of the progress

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
Looks good. My truck seems to have had a few mice in it. The big shock was my donor. When I opened the door to start pulling the steering column I had to stop and say "What is that?" Oh, a four foot long snake skin... After that I went trying to find him. I leaned the bench forward, and lifted a jacket that was behind it...THERE HE IS! Big old black snake. Came back later with back up, and a 12 gauge. I pulled the jacket out and he the ground. Before we could get a bead on him he went under the truck. Couldn't find him. Finally I looked through one of the spokes in the wheels and saw something shiny. It was him! Dude was sitting between the wheel and rotor...

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project
I got the cab floor finished and finished. started on my fuel filler for the RH side i used a piece of metal tubing the size of the filler, havent checked if it will hit the box crossmembers. Since ive installed the rear suburban gas tank i had a skid plate that went with it. Couldn't use it because of the rear bent crossmember. Decided to make my own crossmember out of angle iron and some sheet metal. I will be using two pieces of angle iron the width of the frame and mounting one on the bottom and the top of the inside of the frame.
things that need replacing * replace starter * replace broken speedo cable * wire the new cs alternator * replace positive battery wire * new fuel filters
