woodgrain dash bezel
who sells the best woodgrain sticker for the dash bezel ? I bought a bezel with wood grain from classic truck parts that was already on the bezel and i was happy with the looks of it but had to do some trimming around about every hole where it over lapped and one corner would not stick to the bezel . I probably should of sent it back but ripped it off and bought a new woodgrain sticker and it was not as nice as the sticker that came on the bezel it looked cheaper and it fit way worse than the first one so i trashed it . I really like the woodgrain look but if i cant find a better woodgrain decal im gonna sell this chrome bezel and just get the black one . Anyone know who sells a good one ? thanks

Re: woodgrain dash bezel
Moved to the main forum for more views. There are a few guys (like Cheyenne Super Man) that use factory woodgrain and apply them. I just got one of his bezels I'm not 100% thrilled with, but it's a LOT nicer than the cheaper stickers. About twice as much as one of the woodgrain ones run on a repro bezel, but is correct woodgrain and all my panels now match.

Re: woodgrain dash bezel
GM did I have been trying to find a way to make the repop stickers work. All of the ones I have experimented with turn into a shrinky dink after a while and curl up. I recently purchased another one and have clear coated it to help maintain its rigidity...working on it.

Re: woodgrain dash bezel
We are thinking of making one out of oak... maybe a glove box door to match. If they come out well and people are interested, maybe we will custom make them out of different woods.

Re: woodgrain dash bezel
They are nice. And they are much better than the cheap overlays both in the look of them (matches my original panels) and in fit.
It's the up close pics that bothered me...If it wasn't going to be a full on show truck I wouldn't care...but he knew I was wanting the best of the best.... note it bubbling and not seated totally..have to assume this will pop up over time...it's actually more obvious in person than in the picture... fit and finish... scratches in the chrome bezel doesn't cover the chrome edge

Re: woodgrain dash bezel
Do you know if the factory wood bezels were smoothed first or are they textured? Seems to me like a smooth surface may help with the application of the wood?

Re: woodgrain dash bezel
We can laser cut them out of real thin plastic if the woodgrain does not matter. We are trying to find someone who makes the plastic with the correct woodgrain or soemthing damn close. So far no luck. we can get all kinds of woodgrain. just not one like gm used. we have been looking everywhere

As I mentioned, it is nicer than the repros.....but it's not what I'd call "Show quality" Couldn't tell if you were being completely sarchastic or not

But I understand completely why you're not happy with them. I'm surprised something like that got out of their shop. Everything else I've seen from them is excellent.

Re: woodgrain dash bezel
Jonathon I had the same problem with a bezel and restored glove box overlay from him. For the the amount of money paid they should be better. I have spent alot of money with Gary in the past but after the money I paid for my stuff I doubt I will again... I have purchased several of the NOS bezels with the painted edges (silver) and they absolutely wax the "restored" versions he is selling. You can actually use adhesive release and take the woodgrain off the painted bezel and using 3M super trim adhesive attach it to a chromed version. Yes you will have a lot of money in the set up but it is the correct look etc.

Re: woodgrain dash bezel
A couple things...first...I called about my issues with the bezel and also about a shipping damage issue on Wednesday of last week and have still not heard back. Not happy at all about that. Will be calling tomorrow and if I don't hear from him/get offered a good solution I will be posting in the bad deals section.
I also tried to email but his email isn't going through.... Second, kellytheaker asked me a question about woodgrain tonight. it got to thinking of some other woodgrain I have. It's made by repops and is for the outer woodgrain. So I took a few pictures. They are comparing (left to right and top to bottom) a stock inner door panel, a stock piece of outer trim, the repops woodgrain "sticker", and the panel made by CSM You can actually see in the pictures the factory outer and inner are not a perfect match in grain and the color is way off. I'm sure this is due to sun fading/element exposure. The repops outer woodgrain matches fairly close to both in grain but not in color. It actually matches more closely to the CSM woodgrain. So for anyone wanting to use the CSM interior stuff I feel the repop outer woodgrain tape would be a good option for restoring their trim. I just wish I would have taken a picture of the NOS woodgrain I had. I think it would have matched the color of the repop tape almost perfectly....

Any answers to the gentlemans question fellas? On the subject though, FRENCHBLUE72 has a good question above. What's the underside of those stock bezel's wood grain really look like? . Last edited by ETsC10; 03-15-2011 at 01:06 AM. |

...honestly (as he mentioned in his post) none of the overlays sold fit very well.... There's only one or two vendors making them and none fit properly.

Looks like we've got the best answer we can hope for right now 1972k5blazer.
You have heard from show quality folks here and if there's something new that crops up, I'm sure you will hear about it on this very thread. Thanks to VA72C10 for all of the photos and info! |

Re: woodgrain dash bezel
One very good option is to find someone that does the wood graining by hand and just have the parts you want done. At the Boise Roadster show this past weekend there was a display by "WILDIRON" a 38 Lasalle and a 37 Packard and they had a booth set up with examples of the woodgrain. I specifically asked about a ball park cost for the gauge bezel and glove box door and was quoted around $200 they even had burl wood examples. If you had an example of what you want they can reproduce very closely.Another option is water transfer woodgrain I havnt priced that, and there is a place in Meridian that does this I will be checking with them also. As a side note due to the gauge bezel being plastic it must be properly prepped for paint (primed) and this could be done before sending it out.If anyone is interested I can supply the contact info for both options.I plan on using one of these options myself for the burb.

I've been thinking on this thread since yesterday and found samples of 3M's Di-Noc Wood Grain Series lettering vinyls. I wonder if this might make an affordable alternative for daily drivers? |
